Women in Media-Canberra Networking Night

‘The rise of the portfolio career’

According to the MEAA, more than 1600 Australian media professionals have been made redundant since 2011. It’s true that because of digital disruption, media careers don’t look like they used to. However, it’s not all doom and gloom. Cue the rise of the portfolio career or “slasher” – a person who does many part-time jobs simultaneously.

Join Women in Media Canberra for a panel discussion with three dynamic women in the media industry, Dr Caroline Fisher (Assistant Professor-Journalism at the University of Canberra), Sue White (freelance journalist, travel writer, writing coach and teacher), and Ginger Gorman (social justice journalist, documentary maker, and journalism teacher) to discuss the pros and cons of a portfolio career and how this is quickly becoming the new normal in the media industry.
