Her Interior: Jane Pettersen

Rachel Marsh

I love Jane Pettersen’s heritage home in Ainslie. And I must say, I was not prepared for the playful interior that welcomed me when I stepped through the front door.

The front facade of the beautiful heritage house…you can’t even begin to imagine the colours that burst from inside.

Let me tell you a little about Jane first. She moved here from Melbourne, bringing with her a strong love for fashion, style and design. Not long after moving here, Jane opened her own boutique fashion store in Braddon, Pink Ink, where her artistic flair can also be seen.

Although Jane is in the business of high end fashion, she tells me that interior design has always been a part of her core, and when you meet her in person, you can definitely see that creativity flows through her veins.

Now back to the amazing interior. Jane loves to create tactile spaces that evoke emotion, and her home does just that. As you enter the house, the first thing you see is a stunning mural, painted by local artist Lisa Twomey. The image is magical, and is the perfect piece to guide you into what can only be described as a visually stimulating interior.

Walking through the home, the formal living space is anchored by a hot pink fire place, where Jane says everyone loves to congregate during winter.

Jane’s bold use of colour doesn’t stop there. As I move from room to room, I am confronted with more playful pops of colour and texture. Two of my favourite furniture pieces are the pair of fluffy pink armchairs that balance out the living area perfectly. Jane’s love of pink is also echoed in the family bathroom.

Jane told me how she is drawn to text, and for this reason has selected quotes that she has felt an emotional connection to, and placed them throughout the home. One that really stood out to me was above the sofa and reads: ‘Never learn not to love’.

As I left the living space and walked past the bookcase full of interesting designer books and knick-knacks, I arrived at the master bedroom. In a house this fabulous it is hard to choose a favourite room, but if I had to pick, it would be this one.

Upon first glance, the bedroom looks like any other. Then you turn around and are faced with the most breathtaking wallpaper. The beautifully designed ‘Imperfection’ wallpaper was created by London based designer Jimmie Martin. The juxtaposition between the graffiti inspired wallpaper and the soft floral bed linen is delightful.

The master bedroom is then perfectly complemented by a stunning ensuite, made complete with a digital print of a magnolia on the shower screen. The subtle burst of colour ties in perfectly with the rest of the house, whilst still managing to feel like a tranquil retreat.

I came away from Jane’s house feeling uplifted by the experience. The use of colour and texture is unlike any home I have ever been in – the visit was a great way to start 2015.
