Touch Rugby League Social Club

Getting fit with flexible memberships, friendly faces and a whole lot of fun sounds too good to be true – but what if it wasn’t?
It’s no secret that kicking off a new fitness endeavour can be daunting. Whether it’s that gym membership that’s been haunting your bank account since the New Year or the workout class you’ve been promising your friend you’d join her for, signing up for any kind of fitness journey often comes with a bout of intimidation.
That’s where Touch Rugby League’s latest initiative, The Social Club, steps in. Revolutionising the Canberra health scene and stripping fitness of its scary connotations, The Social Club is all about providing women with the opportunity to get active in a fun, social and flexible environment.
With hordes of social sports already hogging noticeboards around the city, TRL’s point of difference is its accessibility. Where many teams require you to rally the troops of like-minded people to form a team (or worse, search far and wide for an existing team with a spare place) The Social Club recognises this social barrier, building a brand-new approach to social sport.
Whether you’re a newbie to the city, eager to try something new or want to sign up with a fellow rugby curious gal pal, The Social Club is about orchestrating a fun, easy and inexpensive way to wiggle some active minutes into your weekly schedule.
“We do all the work and put you in a team with other Social Club members,” explains TRL Canberra managing director, Benjamin Spencer, “all our members need to do is show up every week at the same time and place to have a game guaranteed”.
So how does it all work? The Social Club is founded on the idea of a super approachable, hassle-free experience. TRL knows that social sport is all too often a big commitment right from the beginning, even before players even know what they’re signing up for, and as such have worked to break down the barriers to social league sport.
The result is a week-by-week direct debit model, with the first week always free for newbies. There’s no pressure to commit and you can join or leave the Club at any time. “There’s no hidden costs,” says Benjamin, “If a member can’t make it one week, they can simply let us know and we cancel their payment”.
While getting fit with friends sounds oh-so-appealing, you might be thinking ‘hang on, isn’t rugby league like State of Origin?’. Don’t fret, TRL subscribes to a non-contact style of footy (so you don’t have to worry about playing against Jarryd Hayne lookalikes). Instead, Social Club players enjoy a semi-competitive game that incorporates elements of traditional rugby league rules without the intimidating physicality.
“TRL is easy to pick up,” assures Benjamin, “…it’s often described as the way you would play touch football if you were playing at an afternoon BBQ in the park”.
The Social Club prides itself on aiding newcomers into the game, teaching you the basics before you hop onto the field. Referees are also on hand to assist new players throughout the game, so what are you waiting for?
