The Rugby Union Womens competition continues to grow in the ACT.
Rugby Union consists of fifteen players on two teams. The ultimate objective for both teams is to strategically run, pass and kick the ball to their end zone and to score more points than their opposing side to win the game.
The Play begins when one team drop kicks the ball from the halfway line towards the opposition. When the ball is in play, it can only be passed laterally or backwards. If the ball is thrown forward or knocked forward from a player’s hand or arm, the opposing team is awarded a scrum.
The opposition can stop players moving up the field by tackling them. Only players carrying the ball can be tackled and once a tackle is completed the opposition can compete for the ball.
Once a tackle has been made by the opposing side, the player tackled must immediately pass the ball or drop the ball to the ground from where they were tackled.
The opponents main objective is to put pressure on their marked opponent. By ensuring each player has a marked opponent, the defence line works effectively together to prevent the other team from scoring.
One referee controls the match with the assistance of two touch judges who approve whether tries have been converted. The game goes for two forty minute halves with a five minute halftime.
