Thinking about taking up running in 2020, or just keen to take things to the next level? We’ve rounded up 25 running events in Canberra for 2020. Strap on those sneakers!
For many women, ‘running’ is intimidating – something only done by the fittest of the fit. But it’s a fantastic and flexible way to get fit, make friends and discover your city. One way to get into running is to reach out and find yourself a fitness tribe; a group of people who can encourage you, mentor you and importantly, keep you accountable.
Luckily Canberra is blessed with a great number of running and fitness groups that can help you stick to your plans, get results and provide an enjoyable journey along the way.
One of the most popular is the YMCA Runners Club of Canberra (formerly the ACT Cross Country Club). With about 1,000 members ranging from new runners through to veterans, you’ll find camaraderie and support – and there are training groups to make sure you’re prepared.
Being part of a running group is such a great experience. It’s a lot easier getting up early in the morning when there’s the assurance of friendly faces and there’s the added motivation of people who will know if you don’t show up. The advice that you get from experienced runners is invaluable, and many of the YCRC team have numerous half marathons and marathons under their belts.
It’s the perfect opportunity to meet new people, start your day with that glorious endorphin high and make some serious progress towards achieving a new challenge – so make sure you get on board!
Dates for your 2020 Canberra running diary
Third Tuesday of each month, commencing 21 January: Black Mountain Run Up and Power Walk – free 2.6km run and power walk.
First Sunday of each month, commencing 2 February: Women and Girls’ Jogalong – 6km; 3km mixed (females all ages and boys under 13); and 1.6km Mini-Jog (boys and girls under 13) options. See canberra.ymca.org.au for more information and locations.
19 January: Kowen Trail Run: New Year’s Resolution Run – 21.1km half marathon, and 12km fun run and walk.
16 February: Sri Chinmoy Fun Run – 4km and 10km fun run/walk.
22 February: 5K Foam Fest Canberra – 5km obstacle course based fun run.
28 March: Relay For Life in Canberra – 24-hour relay
29 March: MS Walk Run + Roll – 5km, 10km & 14.4km
4-5 April: The Canberra Times Running Festival – Kids Mile and 5.3K on Saturday; 10 km, half marathon, marathon and ultra on Sunday.
19 April: Canberra Colour Frenzy – a 5km blend of fun and colour at Weston Park.
27 April: Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail Run Cotter Canter – 2.15km, 5km & 10km
10 May: Mother’s Day Classic – 5 km run or walk and 10 km run.
25-26 May: YMCA Canberra Half Marathon – 21.1km half marathon.
1 June: Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail Runs Stromlo Strides – 2km, 7km & 16km.
8 June: Sri Chinmoy Half-Marathon – 2-mile, 5-mile and half marathon.
21 June: Kowen Winter Trail Run – 12km, half marathon, and marathon course. The marathon course is an approved Six Foot Track qualifier.
28 June: Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail Runs Tuggeranong Trot – 2km, 8km & 20km.
19 July: Sri Chinmoy Canberra Trail Runs Gungahlin Gallop – 2.2km, 10km & 31km.
23-25 August: Capital To Coast – a 100km multistage event held from Friday afternoon to Sunday afternoon at various locations between Canberra and Huskisson.
13 September: Sri Chinmoy Trail 100 – 100km solo/four-leg relay.
21 November: The Grapest 5K Run – 5km or 10km off road fun run and wine tasting “waddle”.
22 November: Stromlo Running Festival – Kids 2.5km, 10km, 30km, 50km
