World Mental Health Day: Do you see what I see?

It’s always amazed me that we each have our own unique perspective on life.

No matter how hard we may try to walk a mile in another person’s shoes, we will never fully see and experience what another person sees – not the exact same shade of colours, not the exact same sunrise, not feel the exact same emotions and their reactions within us.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t try and understand that person’s perspective.

World Mental Health Day is taking place today, Tuesday October 10, and is an initiative of the World Federation for Mental Health to raise public awareness of mental health issues worldwide. One in five Australians are affected by mental illness, but are concerned about seeking support, help or treatment due to the negative stigma that is associated with mental illness.

The theme for World Mental Health Day for 2017 is Do You See What I See? Which is aimed to challenge perceptions about mental illness in Australia and encourages everyone to look at mental health in a more positive light. This is an important effort to reduce stigma and make way for people to seek the help and support that they need, but also deserve.

Mental Health Australia is encouraging people to make a #MentalHealthPromise this World Mental Health Day. Using some of the beautiful photographs available on the website, or by uploading your own, you can make and share a promise to help reduce stigma in mental health in your community. You can also host a Morning Tea for Mental Health at 10.10am on 10 October to discuss the importance and prevalence of helping others and yourself who may be struggling.

There are also heaps of events taking place around Australia to promote the day, and if you’ve had your 10.10am cup of coffee you can head down to the Brindabella Business Park to hear the Air Force Band play live for your lunch.
