Canberra Nara Candle Festival: A celebration of friendship and culture

Posted on

It’s a vibrant celebration of friendship and Japanese culture, where the glow of 2000 candles light up Lennox Gardens, accompanied by music, performances, and cultural demonstrations.

Amongst the picturesque landscape of the Canberra Nara Peace Park’s Lennox Gardens, Canberra’s Candle Festival returns. From 4 pm – 9 pm on Saturday 26 October, this festival celebrates the connection between Nara, Japan and Canberra through music, cultural demonstrations and performances, and the magical glow of 2000 candles.

This evening promises a rich program of performances that blend Japanese traditions with contemporary expressions. On the main stage, entertainers from school kids to experienced adults will perform. The ACT Senior Concert Band, the students of Nara High School, comedian Sean Murphy, and soprano singer Misako Piper will also be featured.

Another event that is widely popular is the cosplay competition. Hosted by the experienced cosplayer, Emerald King, this competition invites participants to embody their favourite characters from anime to video games. Meanwhile, martial arts enthusiasts can enjoy demonstrations of five different styles including Aikido, Laido, Jodo, Kendo and Kyudo.

Commencing at 7 pm, the lighting of 2,000 candles in Peace Park will provide a breathtaking spectacle. Set near the Rotary Peace Bell, this moment is one of the most anticipated parts of the evening and promises to be an unforgettable experience for all attendees.

This festival also features more creative and interactive activities such as calligraphy and origami workshops, a lantern-making station, and the opportunity to ring the Rotary Peace Bell. Don’t forget to visit the photo booth to create some everlasting memories!

This family-friendly event invites guests to celebrate Japanese culture and the friendship between Canberra and Japan. Whether attending to admire the performances, engage in cultural activities, or simply enjoy the ambience of the candlelight, the Canberra Nara Candle Festival offers an unforgettable evening of culture, creativity and community.
