T-Rexes and unicorns, oh my! Is this the most entertaining way to say ‘Nup to the cup’?

Posted on

We think so.

It’s the race that stops the nation, but this year Canberra locals won’t be watching horses race on the big screen – instead, they’ll be flocking to Haig Park for what might just be the best Melbourne Cup event in the city: The Compassionate Stakes.

Taking place on Sunday 27 October from 11 am in Glebe Park, groups in inflatable T-Rex costumes will race each other through the park for first place. But this year is even better – because along with T-Rexes, for the first time, Unicorns will be making their debut on the racetracks.

Founded by the team behind Little Oaks Sanctuary (a registered not-for-profit organisation that offers sanctuary to a range of farmed animals including alpacas, birds, goats, horses, and pigs) the event began as a rather unusual alternative for those who don’t support horse racing but still want to have fun on the day.

And while horses and people in blow-up costumes may seem like a strange or unrelated comparison, according to Kate Luke – co-founder of the Little Oaks Sanctuary – that’s exactly the point.

“I was looking for something because I know there was a growing amount of people around who were not wanting to support horse racing,” says Kate.

“We believe great entertainment doesn’t have to come at the expense of animals. This event proves just that.”

Running until 4 pm, the Compassionate Stakes are open to the public with limited spots available to compete as either a dinosaur or a magical creature. Bookings are essential for all racers, with one round held every 30 minutes until the grand finale – The Compassionate Stakes – at 3.30 pm.

The only thing racers need is their own costume (which can be hired when registering for a race), running shoes, and a good attitude.

Spectator entry is completely free, but for those who still want to get involved without working up a sweat, the Compassionate Stakes Fashion Off The Field competition is back for another year.

With one of Canberra’s most fabulous Drag Queens Fauxnee Phish as the MC, they’ll be celebrating fun, fierce, and fabulous fashion, with prizes fit for royalty.

Along with watching the races, attendees are encouraged to visit informational stalls to learn about critical animal protection issues and enjoy attractions throughout the day – like Kids Dino-Egg & Spoon Races, AND eating Vietnamese street food Au Lac, veggie sausage sizzles and delectable soft-serve treats from Future Swirl.

With all proceeds going towards feeding and caring for several ex-racehorses saved from slaughter (who now call the Little Oak Sanctuary their forever home), Kate hopes that The Compassionate Stakes is a positive and educational experience for anyone interested in learning more about the impact of horse racing.

“Secure your spot and help us make this year’s Compassionate Stakes an unforgettable, compassionate experience,” she says.

Let’s be honest, no matter your stance on the racing industry, who wouldn’t want to race T-Rexes and Unicorns race in Haig Park?
