Fit in the city

Ashleigh Went

Has this frosty weather left you in need of a motivation boost?

Whether you haven’t worked out in a while, need a little diversity in your exercise regime, or are just simply looking for a change, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to where to workout in Canberra – particularly in the city.

Here are six of our favourites to get you started:

If you’ve read many of my articles, you’ll know that I’m a massive fan of small group training. If you live or work in the city, Form Fitness is where you can get your small group training fix.

Why is it so great? Because you get a lot of value for your investment. You still get attention from a personal trainer, at a fraction of what you’d pay for a one-to-one session. Training with other like-minded individuals is a big draw card too, and can go a long way to helping you achieve your goals.

Owners Michael and Rachel are fantastic – they’re friendly and welcoming, and focus on technique so you know you’re in great hands. If it’s long term lifestyle change you’re after, join their 12 Week Transform Challenge – it includes a personalised training program and nutrition assistance, and of course gives you access to their impressive facilities and motivating culture.  It also happens to be located right next to healthy foodie favourite The Goods, perfect for refuelling after your workout – and their bathrooms are surprisingly luxe!

SOULution Yoga is a favourite of many yogis across Canberra, and it’s easy to see why. Their instructors are brilliant (two have taught at our ACTIVE Day events), and they even offer teaching training. The space is beautiful and spacious so you’re not packed in like sardines.

The timetable is really diverse, with a bunch of classes throughout the day—everything from SOUL Barre to Pilates to Ashtanga. Their Yin class on a Sunday evening will leave you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated and ready to take on the week ahead.

Higher Function’s Clinical Pilates classes are heavily based on research and taught by experts in the field. Only qualified physiotherapists can teach Clinical Pilates, and upon meeting Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and Higher Function Director Janet Fabbri it’s very clear that you’re in safe hands. With nearly 30 years of experience in treating musculoskeletal problems and over a decade teaching Clinical Pilates, she’s well and truly equipped to assist you on your fitness or rehabilitation journey.

Both mat work and reformer classes are on offer with a schedule that accommodates a morning workout, a lunchtime session or an after-work class.

If you haven’t yet checked out Canberra’s newest lakeside precinct – Henry Rolland Park – now is the time. The space is so versatile  – there’s fresh green grass to kick around the footy, a stretch of boardwalk for walking, running, or rollerblading, and an undercover area with picnic tables to sit and eat your lunch in the fresh air.

Best of all, there’s a fitness area that features a stationary bike, cross trainer, parallel bars, pull up bars and a suspension training system. The equipment is compatible with the KOMPAN Sport and Fitness App, where you can find exercises and workouts to follow.

Full disclosure: I haven’t trained at Crossfit Three Flow myself, but I’m happy to recommend it based on the rave reviews from everyone who has trained there.

I can, however, testify that owners Annie and Craig are lovely, passionate and incredibly knowledgeable. Their members praise the community culture that Annie and Craig have cultivated since opening.

If you’re a crossfitter looking for a new box, or simply looking to dip a toe in the waters, Crossfit ThreeFlow should be top of your list.

If you like your workouts with a side of glam, then Fernwood Canberra City really is the gym for you. There’s a spa, there are flowers, a hair straightener in the change room, a sauna, nice large lockers to fit that massive gym bag of yours and amenities like hair spray and deodorant. There’s a pink theme that runs through the gym which makes it feel a bit special and girly—in all honesty it’s just a pleasant place to spend your time.

They also offer high intensity Functional classes which you have access to, in addition to the more traditional classes and parts of the gym. That means that you can build a broad training schedule that gives you variety and the freedom to choose how you want to train. Not to mention that in terms of value for money, it’s quite competitively priced.

This beautiful area showcases so many beautiful parts of Canberra, and if you live or work in the city, it’s so easily accessible. The five kilometre route is perfect for a scenic run, or a walk with friends.

If you’re looking to step it up a little, there are plenty of spots to do hill sprints or stair runs, or increase the distance by including Commonwealth Park or extending your run or walk to the Kingston Foreshore and back.
