Get ACTIVE with HerCanberra

Ashleigh Went

Today, Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry, and HerCanberra Founder and Director, Amanda Whitley officially launched HerCanberra ACTIVE.

We’re incredibly excited to announce that—with the support of the ACT Government—we’ve developed a dedicated section focusing on sport, physical activity, nutrition and food, and wellbeing.

ACTIVE will tell the stories of women doing amazing things in the world of sport, share our experiences of Canberra’s wealth of fitness and health services through our Roadtest series, and bring readers information and tips straight from the experts.

We’ve also introduced an exciting new feature: a comprehensive directory of sport and active recreation opportunities within the ACT, which offers free listings to sporting groups and businesses in the Canberra region. The ACTIVE Directory allows users to search by Sport/Activity, Level, Setting, Location and more to find an activity that’s right for them.

Looking to play social touch footy in Weston Creek? We can help you there. Trying to find a gentle, water-based activity to help you get back in shape? Not a problem. Looking for a pram-friendly walk group? Or perhaps you’re an aspiring professional athlete looking for a pathway to professional sport? Our directory can help you, too.

The point is that ACTIVE—and being physically active—is for every woman in Canberra, regardless of age, shape, ability, skill or level of experience. We want to connect you with the people and services you need, to move your body in the way that you want.

And if you’re a member of Canberra’s sport and fitness industry—we want you to get involved too! Take advantage of our free Directory listings, keep us in the loop of events you’re organising—we’re here to help you connect with the women of Canberra.

The importance of being active can’t be understated. There’s a plethora of health benefits—both physical and mental—not to mention it’s fun and a wonderful way to connect with other women in the community. It’s not about being slim or looking good (although those can be positive side-effects!)—it’s allowing yourself to be competitive or creative, to get sweaty, to laugh, to get lost in the moment, to feel good about yourself. It’s connecting with ourselves and with each other.

But wait, there’s more! We’ll be holding the very first ACTIVE Week, commencing Monday 13 November, an initiative that will see HerCanberra pairing up with sporting groups and health and fitness providers to encourage Canberra women to get active.

In short, we’re asking the Canberra sport, health and fitness community to give our readers the opportunity to participate in an activity for free during ACTIVE Week.

What does that mean for you, our lovely readers?

The chance to get active in whatever way you choose—whether that’s trying basketball for the first time, taking a dance class, or joining other mums for a walk about the lake with your prams. No matter your age, level, interests or what side of the lake you live on there’ll be something for you.

Over the next four weeks, we’ll be sharing more information about ACTIVE Week and the range of activities on offer.

Want to know more?

If you own or know a business or organisation who might like to get involved, get in contact! Drop me a line at [email protected] to talk more about being involved.

If you’re a reader who wants to know more about ACTIVE and ACTIVE Week, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll be providing all the juicy details in the coming weeks on what activities we’ll have on offer.

You can also keep an eye on our Facebook page to stay up to date.

We can’t wait to get ACTIVE with you!
