Get fit on the water

Ashleigh Went

She’s the creator of Salti floats, the pioneer of stand-up paddleboard yoga in Canberra, and one of the driving forces behind the wildly successful Goat Yoga, Bend and Beers and of course, Sparkle and Stretch at HerCanberra’s very own ACTIVE Day.

So it comes as little surprise that Jo Flynn of Joga Yoga is about to launch yet another innovative new yoga-inspired offering.

Having recently concluded her land-based yoga classes at The Social Club, Jo has been focussing on her water-based offerings.

“During summer I ran a season of casual Float Yoga classes and I began to attract a handful of regulars,” explains Jo, “I noticed their abilities and confidence transform after just a couple of sessions.”

Following the success of her classes, Jo launched the first round of Strength & Balance at Canberra Olympic Pool. Participants loved it so much that the second round sold out in under 48 hours.

“People wanted more, so I created more. I picked the brains of my clients and the general public and asked them what else they wanted, and I pestered the pool for additional lane hire so that I could deliver more programs.”

Thus, Strength & Balance 2.0 was born. The new six-week program features shorter, 30-minute sessions featuring yoga-inspired movements atop a Salti Float. You’re able to take the program at your own pace, mixing things up with dynamic sequences and some slower poses.

While Jo is an avid yoga enthusiast, having completed her instructor training in Bali, she says that her aim is to help individuals find their own version of yoga.

“Finding my yoga has been quite the journey” says Jo. “My first memories of experiencing this was when I was surfing or paddling. You are so focused on the positioning of your body, how it moves and how you breathe, that you aren’t listening to the chatter in your mind.

“I created the Salti Float as a way for people to experience a similar feeling while enjoying themselves. When you’re on a Float, you’re so focused that if your mind trails off for just a moment, you’re going to fall in the water. And when you do fall, it’s fun!”

In addition to the weekly half-hour classes, Strength & Balance 2.0 participants are given at-home activities via an exclusive Facebook group.

“These activities are easy to follow and based on our session that we practice on the Floats that week, allowing the group to recreate and practice at home to further develop their strength and balance mindfully.”

Support is a key part of any fitness or wellness program, and something Jo will deliver on the group’s Facebook page.

“It will be where we all connect, share, support and chat about our session. The group will be where participants access their guided meditation session at-home activities and optional yoga video for post-float-sesh recovery.”

In addition, Jo will be drawing on her knowledge of essential oils, giving each participant a special blend at the beginning of the program, which they can use to help calm their body and mind down after each session.

If the thought of working out atop a Float makes you a little nervous, that’s the whole point. This is a program that will push you out of your comfort zone, testing your strength and balance, in a way that’s designed to be fun. Expect to laugh, to get wet, learn new skills and grow your confidence in and out of the water.

In addition to developing her new program, Jo has been hard at work putting together a weekend yoga and glamping retreat, aptly named Treat Yo’ Self. Taking place in stunning Jervis Bay from 27-29 July, guests will be treated to luxury glamping accommodation, workshops, yoga, delicious food and drink (yes, there’s wine) and more.
