Lululemon’s Floriade Yoga

Ashleigh Went

When thinking of getting active at Floriade, you might think of a leisurely scenic stroll through the gardens.

That’s certainly one of the highlights of the event, and this year The Heart Foundation are once again hosting 45-minute exercise walks in the mornings at 8am before the doors open to the public.

However, if you like to start your day with a little more zen (and perhaps a little sweat) then you’re in luck: in a joint initiative with lululemon athletica Canberra, Canberra Centre and Floriade, a series of complimentary yoga classes will be on offer on Sunday mornings.

lululemon althletica have been offering complimentary yoga classes in-store since forever – in fact, all stores internationally offer free yoga classes on a Sunday. It’s not just to get people in looking at the active wear. While no one would blame you for picking up a pair of leggings or two (or three…), it’s more about providing yoga instructors a platform to grow and bringing yoga to the community.

What better way to encourage people to get out moving their bodies than outdoor yoga classes in the sunshine among the flowers?

For five weeks, every Sunday morning from 8.30 to 9.30, a different yoga instructor will host a class open to all abilities. There’s strong representation from ulme of Canberra’s best yoga instructors including Justine Janssen of Power Yoga Canberra, Ramone Bisset from Wild Sage Wellbeing, Lucy King of SOULution Yoga and more. Yoga styles will vary too, with something different on offer every week, though all of them will be suitable for beginners through to advanced yogis.

All you need to do is show up with your yoga mat. In fact, there’ll even be a shuttle bus to get you from the Canberra Centre and back so you don’t have to worry about parking. Plus, it’s a nice way to travel in with the group and get to know a few of your fellow yogis – after all, one of the best parts of Lulu’s complimentary classes is meeting new people and making friends.

Stage 88 is the perfect backdrop for a yoga class – you can either set up on the grass in the sun, or under the shelter of the stage in case it’s a bit drizzly. Rain or shine, you can get your zen on.

Take your boyfriend, take your friends, take your mum: these free classes are the perfect way to start your Sunday, make the most of our gorgeous annual flower festival and get your body moving. Why not grab a coffee afterwards and check out what else is on offer? Find the full Floriade program here.
