Get back to basics with Nature Play

HerCanberra Team

Nature Play isn’t the latest TV show, it’s not a computer game and you won’t find it sitting on your couch.

It’s the things you used to do when you were a kid – the fun outdoor stuff that kept your body moving and your imagination firing. It’s the splashing, digging, exploring and running when you’re fishing, biking, camping or hiking.

It is about discovering the world of trees and mud, rocks and flowers and bugs, getting dirty, trying something different, and being swept away by imagination.

It’s a place where we connect with the world around us and where the best memories are made.

Kids today spend less time outdoors than any other generation in history. That’s why the ACT Government is working to get kids back out into the great outdoors with Nature Play CBR. It’s the new program that aims to spark a lifelong love of the great outdoors by encouraging the type of play that lets kids imagine, create and be active. It focuses on the idea that time spent playing outside is linked to happiness, good health, being tough and resilient, and looking after nature.

Most of all though, Nature Play CBR is about encouraging new healthy habits, including stepping away from technology and enjoying the great outdoors.

Nature Play 2

We know it can be hard sometimes to get inspired during a Canberra winter, but the Nature Play CBR website is a treasure trove of inspiration on things to do outdoors, programs to get involved in and resources for families, including seasonal ‘play lists’ filled with exciting and new ideas to tackle outside.

Nature Play 1

The latest play list, Things to do in Winter, has just been released, and is packed with 20 activities to help kids and their families re-connect with nature.

Encourage your kids to feel cold air on hot cheeks, get them jumping in puddles, making friends with mud and going on winter picnics, show them even though it’s cold outside there are still hundreds of memories waiting to be made on the other side of their bedroom window.

Nature Play 3

There’ll be a new list each season, so when spring has sprung be sure to keep an eye on the Nature Play CBR website for a new list of fun, challenging and rewarding outdoor activities.

Nature Play is an initiative developed to help families, schools and community organisations increase the time children spend in unstructured play outdoors and in nature. It was formed in Western Australia in 2011, and also includes Nature Play QLD and Nature Play SA.

Nature Play CBR is one of the key activators in the ACT Government’s recreation strategy, Connecting and Building Recreation: a vision for the Territory. This vision was launched in July 2015, and is about improving the health and wellbeing of Canberrans by supporting more people to see recreation as a fun and easy way to engage in active living.
