A museum dance-off. What could be more Canberra?

HerCanberra Team

A city of national institutions and blockbuster exhibitions, Canberra is well known for its museums.

But now, the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) hope that Canberra will also be known for its killer museum dance moves.

The NFSA has taken a Step Back in Time to produce a video for the international Museum Dance-Off competition (yes, that’s a thing), to the rhythm of Kylie Minogue’s 1990 classic hit.

It’s a video that’s certainly worth a watch (or three), and you can even help them win, with voting open to the public from 10 pm Thursday 19 April to 9:59 pm Friday 20 April (Australian Eastern Time) at whenyouworkatamuseum.com.

Now in its fifth and final year, Museum Dance Off is an international competition featuring museums, galleries, libraries and archives around the world showcasing their facilities and work, as well as their best dance moves.

“Our Museum Dance Off entry showcases the amazing team that we are lucky to have at the NFSA,” says NFSA CEO Jan Müller.

“Our staff are experts in the preservation of Australia’s audiovisual collection, and we wanted to portray the wide range of work that we do in a fun way. They are all very proud of the organisation, as well as committed to the mission of the NFSA, and I think the audience will see that in this clip. Plus, we discovered that some of our colleagues have great dance moves up their sleeves! Please, vote for us this coming 19 April.”

The NFSA will participate in the first Australian semi-final, facing the History Trust of South Australia, and the National Portrait Gallery.

Audiences can watch the clip now, but online voting at www.whenyouworkatamuseum.com will only be open for a 24-hour period on 19-20 April.

The winner of the first round will go to the Australian final on May 7, and a national winner will then participate in the international ‘Thunderdome’ final on May 14.
