A new hub crafted just for Canberra creatives!

HerCanberra Team

Canberra is a creative city, and tonight we get even more crafty, with the addition of a brand new Makers Hub, opening in Macquarie.  The brainchild of Canberra Creatives founder, Mikaela Danvers (who, incidentally, created the HerCanberra logo!), the hub is a multipurpose space for creative people and crafters – established specifically for the purpose of creating, engaging and learning.

The Makers Hub will become the venue for the large range of workshops that Canberra Creatives have run over the past few years.  The venue is also an exhibition space, a place to grab craft supplies, have a party or simply come and create something special.

Mikaela said of the new venture, “it’s always been something that I’ve dreamed about setting up.  There is such an active creative community in Canberra and I wanted to set up a space that enabled people to get together and do what they love”.

A trip to New York last year proved to be the catalyst for moving this project from dream to reality.  The ‘makers movement’ is huge in the US and has spawned a number of commercial creative spaces where people congregate to craft, converse and create.

“I love the energy behind the makers movement in the US, and I wanted to build a space to incorporate a little bit of this ‘vibe’ right here in Australia. We are after all, every bit as creative!”, she said.

The Makers Hub offers a huge range of workshops under one roof, but that’s not all there is. There’s venue hire for for craft groups, unique meetings, running your own workshops, throwing parties, hosting functions, or whatever creative activity you need a venue for; there’s the exhibition space within The Makers Hub, which is suitable for all crafters and makers to display a body of work in any form; and there’s a small but high quality range of crafting supplies for sale.

A membership to The Makers Hub gives you unlimited access (during opening hours) to all of their tools, machinery and equipment – they plan to be decked out with a kiln, a Cameo cutting machine, button press machines, a sewing machine, screen printing supplies, craft punches, guillotine, laminator, laser printer, a library of design and business books and magazines, and a letterpress printing press! This place is a crafter’s idea of heaven!

Want to help deck The Makers Hub out with the coolest creative equipment available in Canberra (all for you to use)? Canberra Creatives has just launched a Pozible campaign to help fund the tools, machinery, appliances and supplies, to facilitate as many art, craft and design activities as possible. The more funds they raise, the more cool stuff they can get for you to play with…find out how you can pledge.
