A RAW farewell to Sarina

Ashleigh Went

In just two-and-a-half years, Sarina del Fuego has made many significant contributions to the Canberra arts scene.

To name just a few of her accomplishments, Sarina been responsible for bringing Noir Revue to the Famous Spiegeltent for Canberra’s Enlighten Festival and the Abbey, presented Canberra’s first Short + Sweet Cabaret Festival at the Canberra Theatre, set up Figure it in – a weekly sketch club at Civic Pub. As a burlesque and cabaret performer herself, she has performed at You Are Here Festival, the National Gallery of Australia, Hustle & Scout, Parties at the Shops and much more.

In 2013, we named Sarina one of Canberra’s Most Fascinating Women – and for good reason: it was the year that Sarina launched RAW Canberra. As Showcase Director, has watched the event bloom into what it remains today: a one-night creative explosion that features approximately 30 artists in film, fashion, hair, makeup, music, visual art, photography, and performing art.

RAW an in international independent arts organisation originally founded in Los Angeles in 2009. It’s run for artists, by artists in over 60 cities across the United Stated, Australia, Canada and the UK.

Tonight marks the RAW Canberra’s second showcase for 2015. GRANDEUR will see a stellar collection of artists coming together for what is set to be a remarkable evening.

When asked what the highlight of GRADNDEUR will be, Sarina says “RAW Canberra is the highlight. We always have so much variety to offer. Tomorrow we have a belly dance performance by Kirsty, live street art by Rilla, makeup by Erin Pittard hitting the catwalk which always causes a stir, a guitar and cello duo bringing you some smooth jazz, blues and fold, visual arts from Realism to Surrealism and much, much more.”

The event switches venue each year, and this year will be gracing the Belconnen Arts Centre – a perfect partner for the event. Sarina describes the venue as a “24/7 supporter of the Arts”.

“Belconnen is also unchartered water for us, as we have been previously located in Civic. It is rather exciting for Northside artists and guests to be able to walk or easily access the venue and be able to enjoy the fabulous cocktails and drinks and get home easily.”

The showcase is indeed a fantastic chance for guests to enjoy a spectacular evening celebrating Canberra artists, but also presents a unique opportunity for the artists themselves.

“That’s why I got drawn into this role” says Sarina. “For the get go, I’m out there promoting each artist. Once they are booked in they get a portfolio page on the RAW Artists website that stays with us forever, making the artist easy to search, find and book for agents and the general public.”

During the showcase, artists can sell their work to guests, as well as build and interact with their fan base. It’s a wonderful chance for artists to get exposure and join forces with such a distinctive organisation.

“After the showcase RAW Artists continue to be part of our family with deal and opportunities that are just for them. They also get to showcase at another RAW showcase at any of our other RAW locations worldwide, and each year we offer up RAWard career building prizes to continue to support our local RAW artists,” says Sarina.

GRANDEUR presents a bittersweet moment, as it will be Sarina’s last RAW Canberra showcase. The Showcase Director has poured her heart and soul into the event. She’s spent the last eight weeks hiring, printing, promoting, advertising and curating, along with looking after the artists. It’s a time she describes as “exhausting but absolutely enjoyable.”

When asked what she’ll miss the most about her role, Sarina says “everything! All the beautiful and talented Canberra artists I have had the joy of working with and getting to know.”

Canberra will dearly miss this vibrant woman, and we look forward to celebrating both Sarina’s work and the work of the brilliant RAW Canberra artists in all their GRANDEUR at tonight’s showcase.
