Celebrity illustrator coming to Canberra to celebrate mums

Emma Macdonald

His illustrations are coveted the world over – and his client list includes Rolls Royce, Moet et Chandon, Estee Lauder and Swarovski.

If you are anywhere in the vicinity of Westfield Woden on Friday or Westfield Belconnen on Saturday then you too can be immortalised by Aaron Favaloro.

A childhood sketcher who remembers his primary school math book filling with doodles, and images of random “fashion girls”, Aaron got through high school with very little math knowledge, but a definite artistic style.

He thanks Instagram for his big break – an illustration he posted of Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing, Nicole Ritchie and Rosie Huntington was quickly regrammed by the mega-stars themselves.

Nearly 74,000 followers later and Aaron’s work has now been posted by Kim Kardashian, Oprah, Jean Paul Gaultier and Gisele, among others.

But the Sydney-based surf-lover is as down-to-earth as they come and says he wants to use his session times at the Woden and Belconnen Westfields to pay homage to mothers over the Mother’s Day weekend.

An identical twin, and one of four kids, Aaron adores his own mum Jane, and says it is a lovely time of year to recognise that mums are usually the unsung heroes of the household.

“Really, mums can put dads to shame when you stop to think about it. When I was growing up my mum held down five part-time jobs, and managed to cook and clean and bath us and put us all to bed and then get up the next day and do it all over again. I love my mum.”

Mums will be invited to “sit” for Aaron for a custom illustration, which they can take away as a gift.

While some of his major international campaigns can take him months of work, Aaron says he and his “bionic” arm can do a sketch in just over five minutes.

“There is actually quite a thrill to doing a fast sketch in pen – no pencil – where a mistake is part of the originality of the piece.”

While he is unashamedly obsessed with fashion, Aaron says that prospective mum-models need not stress too much about what to wear if they attend.

“It’s about wearing something they feel happy in – it can be flares and thongs, I can make it work!”

the essentials

Westfield Woden is hosting Aaron on Friday 12 May between 4pm and 8pm at a Champagne and Shop session in Centre Court – where mums can sip on a glass of Champagne Duperrey and enjoy some sweet treats provided by The Sugar Deli.

For Belconnen locals, Westfield Belconnen is hosting their Mother’s Day Lounge with Aaron on Saturday 13 May between 11am and 3pm, where complimentary tea and Aaron Favaloro-designed wrapping paper will be available.
