As school bells ring for the last time this term, parents around Canberra scratch their heads, thinking of ways to entertain their kids over these next two weeks.

We’ve gone ahead and gathered a list of activities that both you and the kids are guaranteed to love. Read on for some great ideas to keep the whole family smiling.

NFSA KIDS

The National Film and Sound Archive has family fun covered this school holidays. Become a member of their two-week program and take your pick from a selection of fun films and fascinating live shows. From modern blockbusters like ‘Frozen’ and ‘The Lego Movie’ to classic films like ‘Fantasia’ and ‘Mary Poppins’, there’s plenty to enjoy for both the young and the young at heart.

Enjoy a fortnight of films and live shows as a family (2 adults, 2 children) for just $75, or buy an individual membership for just $25.

SCHOOL HOLIDAYS AT THE NATIONAL MUSEUM- VOYAGES OF DISCOVERY: ADVENTURES AT SEA

Ahoy explorers and artists! Join the National Museum these school holidays for art and science activities inspired by their exhibition, The Art of Science: Baudin’s Voyagers.

Be part of Captain Baudin’s crew and make your own telescope, then work with an artist from NatureArt Lab to paint your own nature-inspired artwork and share your family’s journey on a giant map.

LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE AT THE OPEN AIR CINEMA

Bring a blanket (and a beanie), a picnic, and your friends for a movie night of family fun under the stars. If bringing a picnic isn’t your thing, there will be a variety of delicious food and drink available to purchase!

This is an alcohol-free family event.

Please ensure all children under 18 are accompanied by an adult.

BRUMBIES SUNDAY FUN DAY

Head to GIO Stadium fro Brumbies Sunday Fun Day on 22 April. There are lots of great activities in the Western Fun zone before kick-off: The Brumbies inflatable field where kids can kick a rugby ball with the Brumbies rugby development officers, and also some Plus500 Brumbies, Rugby Tiny Tots for the little ones, and face painting. They’ll also be giving away Brumbies posters that you can have signed by your favourite players, plus lots of other freebies on the day – including free Brumbies capes and pencil cases for the first 200 kids through the gate, plus rugby balls and lolly bags.

For the first time this year, there’ll be “Fans on the Field” where the crowd can come out of their seats and onto the field after full time and meet the Plus500 Brumbies.

PLAYUP

Discover PlayUP – The Right to Have an Opinion and Be Heard, where kids can explore the United Nations Convention on the Rights of a Child in a playful way. Adults can even join in the fun too! From listening pods and a roleplay Kindness Café to a fuzzy felt wall and craft activities, PlayUP has a range of exciting and immersive experiences that flip the traditional idea of museums completely on its head.

NATURE ART LAB- EXPLORE NATURE ART

NatureArt Lab is dedicated to inspiring young people and encouraging a lifelong love and understanding of nature through the imaginative influence of art. Using enquiry-based learning approaches, students will use drawing, painting and other creative activities to learn about nature. Experience animal encounters, use hands-on examination of our natural history collection (with microscopes) and explore our local environment with nature journaling techniques.

Suitable for ages 5-12.

VICTORIA’S MODELS

Is your child interested in modelling or acting? Victoria’s Models offers courses to improve life skills, self-confidence and presentation, as well as training for the modelling industry.

They have a course running 23-27 April, suitable for 12 – 17-year-olds. Their courses cover grooming, deportment, etiquette, catwalk, TV commercials, photographic and promotional modelling.

THE LINDY CHARM SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

A beautiful few hours of pampering time with your daughter/niece/friend etc, playing with hair and makeup techniques and also learning about: how to walk, posture, posing and poise, along with some great tips on manners and etiquette to get you through any social occasion!

A great way to empower young ladies and teach them about the importance of good grooming, the art of charm and putting their best foot forward.

LEGO for kids this school holidays

For Canberra kids looking for something fun and free these school holidays, join BRICKS 4 KIDZ at Majura Park Shopping Centre for some LEGO building workshops.

BUDDING THEATRE- MYTH AND FANTASY: APRIL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

This five-day drama program helps students develop confidence and performance skills in a supportive environment. Students will have fun acting, improvising, playing theatre sports and developing their own production for family and friends, taking inspiration from the genres of myth and fantasy.

Each student is encouraged to express themselves by bringing their own ideas to the rehearsal room as the teachers develop a performance that reflects the participants’ interests and passions, drawing on sources such as myth, legend, superheroes and fairytales.

Suitable for ages 6-12.

Based in a city location with an experienced drama teacher, places are limited and bookings are essential.

Want to keep your kids active and entertained over the school holidays in a safe environment? School holidays at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) has a focus on participation and having a good time.
