Beyond FASHFEST 2016: New partnerships, new opportunities

HerCanberra Team

Standing among a crowd of sponsors, models, fashionistas and bloggers under the golden leaves of Canberra Centre’s Eden space, founders of FASHFEST Andrea and Clint Hutchinson officially launched FASHFEST 2016.

“FASHFEST is a great social night out,” said Clint about FASHFEST 2016. “It celebrates so many of Canberra’s creatives, crossing fashion, film, music and more. And this year is bigger and better with more than 40 designers, including from the capital, interstate and overseas, as far away as Mumbai.”

As we’ve highlighted already, FASHFEST 2016 will be three nights like no other, with international designers, next level make-up artistry and more models than ever gracing the catwalk from September 29-October 1 at the Canberra Convention Centre.

But scratch the glitzy surface of FASHFEST and you’ll find there’s more to the event than just the three nights of glamour.

At FASHFEST’s launch, a new partnership was announced that cemented FASHFEST’s position as an industry leader not just for the showcasing of great local talent, but the mentoring of that talent also.

A new partnership between Bradley Allen Love Lawyers and FASHFEST will allow designers to expand their business acumen by undertaking internships with the leading Canberra law firm.

“I’m excited today to launch a new mentorship program between Bradley Allen Love Lawyers (B.A.L. Lawyers) and FASHFEST,” said Susan Proctor of B.A.L “This collaboration stitches together creativity and knowledge for the perfect fit.”

The BAL–FASHFEST Mentorship Program, will give six intakes from six creative fields, connected to the world of fashion, a chance to build their business acumen.

“You may think it odd that a legal firm stitches up a relationship with a fashion event. Or is it odd?” asked Susan. “We were attracted to FASHFEST not just because puts on a stunning, three-day fashion experience, but because of the event’s aspirations.”

Susan says that BAL’s program hopes to cover aspects of business that fashion designers may not have thought about, such as company structure, contract terms, copyright or supply agreements.

“When speaking to Clint and Andrea Hutchinson, who have put their heart and soul into this event, we were immediately struck by their energy and drive,” said Susan. “We were also struck by their determination—and the determination of the rest of the FASHFEST team—to cultivate talent.”

With FASHFEST’s opening night only two weeks away, it’s encouraging to know that the designers who showcase on the night can look forward to not just their big runway moment, but the possibility of furthering their businesses through an internship too.

FASHFEST is on at the National Convention Centre Canberra, from 29 September to 1 October, with a 6.30pm and an 8.30pm show on each night. Got your ticket yet?
