Canberra’s getting a Wintervention

HerCanberra Team

Wind, grey skies and occasional snow, winter is the time of year Canberrans really lives up to its sub-alpine categorisation.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. This year, a host of fun, family-friendly activities are coming to the city to make the most of the season.

As we wrote last week, ice skating will return to the city to headline Wintervention, an ACT Government initiative that will keep people active and entertained during the chilly months.

City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow says Wintervention will include a mix of old favourites and new activations.

“Ice skating…and the World Curry Festival will be back again this year, but we also have some great new events and installations to keep the city centre buzzing during winter,” he explains. “It can be difficult to get motivated to be out and about when the temperature dips, so our Wintervention is designed to remind people there’s plenty to do in the city centre, even when it’s cold outside.”

Skating A Canberra

Wintervention draws on lively traditions from the northern hemisphere that show that just because it’s cold, it doesn’t mean it’s boring.

“Plenty of cities get cold but are able to stay lively, so we want people to rethink winter in Canberra,” says Malcolm. “Put on a warm coat, beanie, scarf and gloves and get out and enjoy all the city centre has to offer.”

“These interventions are designed to increase activity in our public spaces to complement the many entertainment, dining and retail attractions that exist in the city centre.”

“From pop-up parks to poetry breakfasts, and music and art showcases there are plenty of interesting experiences for Canberrans and visitors to enjoy.”
