Capital Inc: local opinion online

Posted on

Capital Inc is Canberra’s first ever YouTube news opinion show featuring our city’s top journalists and broadcasters.

As our traditional local media market contracts and syndicated content from other cities continues to rise, Canberra is coming into its own as a city. More and more we’re seeing independent organisations (like our own) fill the gap. And now there’s a new kid in town when it comes to local news and opinion – Capital Inc.

The initiative is the brainchild of Damien Maher, managing director of Newcast Studios, an online and live video production studio.

“People are consuming news media very differently today compared with a few years ago.” says Damien.

“Social media has its place, but it shouldn’t be the only source for news and with a shrinking media market this is a risk. We wanted to make opinion content that is free of commercial restraints and I think the market will really benefit from this decision.”

Anchored by Chris Kimball, well known (and loved) by Canberra audiences as the former anchor of ABC TV’s 7:30 and now CEO of Snowy Hydro Southcare Rescue Helicopter Trust, Capital Inc also features a panel of well known local journalists. March episodes show HerCanberra’s founder, Amanda Whitley, discussing topical issues with Kristen Henry, Breakfast Host with FM106.3; Canberra Times’ senior journalist, Emma Macdonald; and social justice journalist, Ginger Gorman. The panel will expand from time to time and also feature guests such as politicians, experts, opinion makers and other Canberrans who are in the news.

“Over the next few segments, we’ll discuss everything from vegies on the verge to lockout laws—the show is all about discussing the issues that are important to Canberrans, from the serious to the lighter side.”

The weekly show will be broadcast weekly on the Capital Inc YouTube Channel, every Wednesday at midday, with plans to eventually live stream the show.

“The response to our teasers has been overwhelmingly positive, with most people really happy to see some fresh video content in the market. I hope that the show becomes a mainstay of the Canberra media landscape, enriches local journalism and inspires others to take the risk to make video content about our great city of Canberra!”
