Colour, Wine and Soul: The Perfect Girls Weekend

Ashleigh Went

Maybe our girlfriends are our soul mates, and guys are just people to have fun with.” – Samantha Jones, Sex and the City

Last weekend we celebrated Valentines Day—the ultimate reminder of how wonderful and magical romantic love is (or for us single ladies, a day to drink wine and watch rom-coms).

Having a partner is lovely. However, let us remember there are few things in life as fabulous as a good quality girls’ weekend. This weekend in particular provides the perfect menu of activities for you and your soul mates, without having to venture out of our gorgeous city.

Whether you’re into fitness, health, spirituality, great food or the perfect drop, there’s something for every Canberra girl.

2015 Canberra Health Harmony Soul Festival

Sarah Berenson from Change Coaching Australia will also be there, so if you’ve been keen to put the gloves on and take up boxing then why not stop by and have a chat about her CardioBox classes.

2015 Food and Wine Expo

Let’s be honest, one of the main reasons that I exercise is so that I can eat more food and drink more wine. Vino and good eats are one of life’s greatest pleasures and deserve to be celebrated. And I plan to do just that with three days of gourmet food, wine and celebrity chefs at the 2015 Food and Wine Expo at the National Convention Centre this weekend.

There’ll be cooking demonstrations from some of the Masterchef greats including Ben Milbourne, Courtney Roulston and Rishi Desai, as well as Nikhil Jain, Prasantha Giragama, and Shaun Arantz of Racine Restaurant. Exhibitors include local and regional and international wineries and distributors, chocolatiers, breweries, gourmet producers and more. There’s even some healthier options including Aussie Farmers Direct, HelloFresh, and Isagenix.

There’s also an opportunity to dine with Ben Milbourne for a degustation in the Canberra Dining Room! But there’s limited seating so get in quick—the menu looks amazing. Plus you won’t want to miss the whopping $50,000 worth of giveaways up for grabs and of course all the samples on offer too!

The Swisse Colour Run

If you’re hitting the Food and Wine Festival on Saturday, be sure to take it easy on the vino as Sunday is the day of The Colour Run! Also known as “the happiest 5km on the planet”, The Colour Run is a unique paint race that celebrates healthiness, happiness and individuality.

Starting at Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park, the run is a loop that features different coloured powder at every kilometre interval with entertainment and colour throws at the end. The result is a fun, vibrant and messy event with laughter, dancing, great photos and of course—a 5km run.

If you’re worried about the colour itself, don’t stress. It’s natural food grade cornstarch and is completely safe. There’s a Cleaning Zone where loose powder is blown off you, but if you’re sporting any highlights be sure to use a leave-in conditioner or some Moroccan or coconut oil in your hair prior to the race. Anti-dandruff shampoo is recommended for washing it out.

Your ticket includes a race bib, Colour Run shirt, sweat band, wristband, shoulder bag, and temporary tattoo, plus a bottle of water and packet of coloured powder at the finish line. And, of course, entry to the Finish Festival to celebrate!

The essentials

What: The Swisse Colour Run
When: 8am start, Sunday 22 February
Where: Stage 88, Commonwealth Park
How much: $65 for individuals or $60 per person for teams of four or more

Summerside Festival

If you feel like a romp around the countryside exploring the best of Canberra’s local wine region then grab the girls and experience the Summerside Festival. Here’s three things that you’ll love including a spot of tea…

Meet the Locals

A wonderful opportunity to try the best of our local wines in the city, during the Summerside Festival the East Hotel is once again playing host to a number of local wineries.

This Friday evening you can ‘meet the locals’ when a handful of the region’s finest wineries will head to Kingston to peddle their wares the old fashioned way – taste and talk. You can taste a great selection of local wines and pick up your favourites to take out to dinner afterwards and impress all your friends with a great local wine. Tickets can be purchased online for $20 or at the door for $25.

Shakespeare in the Vines

Flint at Shaw Vineyard is presenting a spectacular event with Shakespeare in the Vines.  Now in its fourth year, the show this year will be Macbeth for one night only on Friday 20 February.

Held in the beautiful countryside setting at the Shaw Vineyard Estate the talented team at Flint have a couple of dining options for guest including restaurant dining with a two-course dinner or hamper packages including tickets and a hamper stocked with a bottle of local wine, cheese and antipasto platter with crackers and a sweet treat. Bookings are essential and this will sell out so be quick.

High tea at Tallagandra

Head out for the day and explore the cellar doors at the wineries of The Poacher’s Way, including Tallagandra Hill – one of our favourites of the Canberra District.

Annemaree and Brad at Tallagandra Hill are presenting a Summerside High Tea during February. Get a few friends together and make the most of this delicious menu including a selection of finger sandwiches, petit fours, sweet and savoury pastries, scones with preserve and cream, tea or coffee and a glass of Tallagandra Hill Sparkling Chardonnay. The price is $39.00 per person and bookings are essential.
