Fresh Flowers, Fresh Glass

Emily Simpson

If all of the Floriade hype is leaving you with a newfound obsession with flowers, then you’ll want to get along to the Fresh Glass exhibition at the Canberra Glassworks.

The exhibition celebrates the beauty of both flower arrangements and the glass vessels that hold them, says the Glassworks’ General Manager, Beverly Growden.

“Drawing inspiration from spring and to celebrate Floriade, Fresh Glass pairs studio glass vessels and sculpture with fresh botanical illustrations,” says Beverly. “Artists have been invited to collaborate across the mediums to elaborate on one of the most functional forms of glass”.

Coinciding with Floriade 2016: Life in Bloom, the exhibition will be held between 15 September and 30 October 2016.

“Curated by Narelle Phillips, the exhibition will include the works of floral artists including Shizuko Barber, Bloomin Mad Floral Designs, brave botanics, Lady Larissa, Moxom + Whitney, Natures Child Botanical Styling and Peking Spring,” says Beverly.

Fresh Glass will also be the place for amateur florists as – in addition to the exhibition – the Glassworks will be hosting a number of florist’s pop-up shops in its foyer on each Saturday of the exhibition, including an ikebana demonstration on October 6.

The following schedule outlines the dates for the pop-up shops:

  • Saturday 17 Sept – Kate (Peking Spring)
  • Saturday 24 Sept  – Narelle (brave botanics)
  • Saturday 1 Oct – Amalie (Nature’s Child)
  • Saturday 15 Oct – Narelle (brave botanics)
  • Saturday 22 Oct – Kate (Peking Spring)

If your weekends are spent browsing market blooms and coordinating them into intricate bunches, Fresh Glass will give you both the skills and courage to expand your floral stylings – who knows what new Canberra floralista might be born from these workshops.
