HerCanberra Team

More than 10,000 music lovers will pitch their picnic rugs on Googong’s Rockley Oval this Saturday 3 February for the biggest Googfest yet.

Now in its fourth year, the huge free concert is renowned for dishing up big-name acts with a side of the hottest new talent in Canberra’s bustling music scene.

This year is no different. What could be described as a musical hot pot will have sounds to suit everyone, with a big emphasis on party fun so you, your mum, your kids and your mates can dance the night away.

Googfest 2018 will have you chilling to the laidback vibe of Sophie Edwards and her signature ukulele, tapping your toes to singer/songwriter Ned Philpot, pumping up your sneakers with the help of dance duo Mondecreen, and picking up the pace with the party-loving Baker Boys Band as they pump out your sing-along faves.

The Aston Shuffle will be headlining. Well known for their Friday Night Shuffle on Triple J, the duo has had a very successful recording career and performed in clubs and festivals around the world. DJ Mikah Freeman will be heading to Googong to lead a house music set for his Canberra home crowd.

“I’ve heard really good things about Googfest and it’s the first time I can bring my whole family to a show, so it should be fun!” he said.

This year for the first time, local performers pitched for their chance to be part of Googfest and four have been offered the big break.

Sophie Edwards will kick off the revelry. The 18-year-old university music student has blossomed onto Canberra’s music scene with her own special style that ranges from laidback acoustic and jazz to high energy pop.

“Googfest is going to be amazing. I’ve never performed in front of such a big audience and I can’t wait to introduce everyone to my original material,” says Sophie.

Ned Philpot, fresh from a tour in Japan, will duck out of the recording studio to showcase his talents. The 20-year-old has recently signed with Audiopaxx which has produced successful collaborations with Amastro, MashdnKutcher, Oriental Cravings and Sayya.

Other highlights include Mondecreen – the bass-driven and funk-influenced duo of George Stavridis and Roshan Fernandez – whose high energy, upbeat sound has seen them supporting the likes of Olympic Ayres, BOO SEEKA, ASTA, Alex Lahey, Citizen Kay and SAFIA.

The tempo will kick up another notch with The Baker Boys Band – a high energy and high fun group with a special connection to Googong. Five of the band members who will be on stage at Googfest live in the community and know just how the new town likes it’s fun.

“Googong is a really cool area. The community is growing and we love it here,” said trumpeter/saxophonist and band spokesman Callum Gracie.

Hosted by Googong township developers, Peet and Mirvac, Googfest has grown into one of the biggest outdoor music festivals in the ACT region … and best of all it’s free.

“Googonians love a great party and Googfest is one of our signature events,” said Googong Project Director Malcolm Leslie. “Everyone is invited to come, experience the excellent facilities and atmosphere that Googong has to offer, and enjoy some outstanding local talent.”

The night doesn’t end with the fine musical line-up. Googfest is the place to while away a long summer evening with friends, share a picnic under the stars, or save the washing up and treat yourself to a meal from one of the many gourmet food trucks.

Get there early to claim a good spot and be sure to stay for the fireworks finale.
