Giveaway: Lavazza Italian Film Festival

Beatrice Smith

I’m not sure about you, but I have always been somewhat obsessed with Italy.

When I look back for the source of this fascination, beyond Facebook friend’s envy-inducing travel selfies or even traveling there myself, it’s Italian films that come to mind.

Whether it’s Audrey Hepburn tightening her grip on Gregory Peck’s waist as they zoom around on a Vespa in Roman Holiday, Daniel Craig’s James Bond recuperating next to Lake Como in Casino Royale, the iconic image of Anita Ekberg bathing in the Trevi Fountain in La Dolce Vita or (my personal favourite) Lizzie Maguire’s adventures in Rome with an Italian pop star in the eponymous film, Italy never fails to disappoint on camera.

This beautiful country and its talented occupants will be center screen later this month with the Lavazza Italian Film Festival coming to Canberra from Tuesday 22 September to Sunday 11 October at Palace Electric Cinemas.

I was lucky enough to attend the media screening of Mia Madre last week, a highlight of the festival that scooped both praise and awards in both Italy and the Cannes Film Festival when it was released. A taut drama with a touching finish, Mia Madre‘s rich landscape of emotion and loss focuses on the intricate detail of relationships and family. I highly recommend seeing it later this month.

The full program of films can be accessed here.
