Her Say: Issue of the Week

Laura Peppas and Hayley O'Neill

In this weekly street series, we pick a hot topic of the week and ask for your thoughts…

This week we ask…

“With upgrades announced for Charnwood, Griffith and Theodore shops this year, do you think the ACT government should be spending more money on improving other local shops around Canberra?”

“I think so definitely, I live in Ainslie, so there seems to be an established kind of culture and I think other places could use a bit of a pick me up, it would be nice for every local shop to have a cafe and pub so you could go down and have a drink without having to travel too far.” Emma, 24, Ainslie.

“I’m at Nicholls, I tend to go there a bit because there’s nice tea and coffee shops. I think it’s much nicer to be able to walk or not drive particularly far, rather than drive for 20 minutes just to go and get a coffee, so yes I think it would be a good thing.” Sally, 29, Nicholls.

“A few of the shops in some suburbs are looking very rundown – it would be nice if they all had their own butchers, pubs, cafes and post offices so we don’t always have to go to the mall, and it’s also good for small business owners.” Taylor, 22, NewActon.

“I don’t think they should necessarily be putting money into local shops, I think they should look after the city to start with – you’ve got to look after what you’ve got. Right now, the demand is in the city.” Roslyn, Yarralumla (requested no photo shown).
