Hot summer nights: three ideas for your Friday

HerCanberra Team

January in Canberra comes with a guarantee of two things: oppressive heat and the back to work blues.

Even if your 9-5 is your dream job, coming back from time away is never easy and with temperatures set to tickle 38 degrees this weekend, there’s never been a better time for a pick me up.

Luckily, all around Canberra, people are taking advantage of those sweet sunset hours to put on a range of events designed to stretch out your days for maximum enjoyment. So what are you waiting for?

Don’t ‘Darling’ me, Darling: Starstruck Summer Nights

Miss Ellaneous via portrait.gov.au.

Drag bingo, live music and cheeky tours are just the tip of the iceberg at the National Portrait Gallery‘s fun Friday late night sessions.

The event series kicks off this Friday 19 January from 5 pm with drag bingo hosted by the fabulous Miss Ellaneous and music from the Zackerbilks, including Jamal Salem on drums, Zach Raffan on trumpet, and Robbie Mann on Piano.

There will also be bar service and snacks available. The best part? Aside from the tours (which we highly recommend), it’s all free.

Starstruck Summer Nights will also run on 2 and 9 February.

19 January and 2 + 9 February from 5 – 8 pm | National Portrait Gallery | Free (option of seeing Starstruck: Australian Movie Portraits or taking a tour) | Click here for more information

ARBORETUM AFTER HOURS

Home to one of the best sunset views in Canberra, the National Arboretum is keeping its doors open until 9 pm this Friday 19 January.

The drinks will be flowing (Champagne Charlie, Pimms Cup or Espresso Martini, anyone?) and the antipasto platters will be primed, perfect for an evening of delicious food and drink on the Village Centre’s panoramic deck.

There will also be live music, free guided “Fire and Water” walks, free entry and free parking and The Curatoreum Shop will even be open for a cheeky bit of late night shopping.

Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic rug, food and drinks and relax on the grass outside.

19 January from 5 – 9 pm | The National Arboretum |  No bookings required | For information, call 02 6207 8484 or click here
