The 2016 MS Walk and Fun Run

Amanda Whitley

“This weekend, there’s something you can do — be a part of the Canberra MS Walk and Fun Run.”

Like many children, my first contact with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) was the MS Read-a-thon, which I would do religiously each year; however, I had little concept of the disease I was raising funds for. It wasn’t until a decade later that it really hit home — quite literally.

I was at home in Narrandera on university holidays and noticed my Dad was having problems with his leg, falling on several occasions. I asked him what was wrong and in true ‘bloke’ fashion he said, ‘oh, it’s just my knee’. He ignored the signs for months until he finally saw the GP and was told it was either a brain tumour, cancer of the spine or MS.

It took several years of tests to diagnose his disease as MS, and I decided to move back closer to home to be there to support the family. Dad hasn’t had an easy run for the past 15 years – his MS was severe, and he was forced into a nursing home in his early fifties, alongside patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

That’s why it is so crucial to raise funds to continue research into the disease and for support services for those affected, including their families. This weekend, there’s something you can do — be a part of the Canberra MS Walk and Fun Run. Here’s all you need to know.

Getting there

The Canberra MS Walk and Fun Run event starts and ends at Rond Terraces in Commonwealth Park, Parkes Way.

Accessible parking will be reserved at the Rond Terrace car park for participants with a disability. On- and off-street parking is available along Constitution Avenue between Wendouree Drive and Coranderk Street and you can walk to the event by using the underground walkway to cross Parkes Way.

To avoid delays or missing out on convenient parking, choose to carpool, ask a friend to drop you off or get public transport. Buses run down Commonwealth Avenue. Check the transport planner at www.action.act.gov.au since services are limited on Sundays.

The route

The run starts at 8:50am and the walk starts at 10:25am. From Rond Terraces, the 5km or 10km course loops around beautiful Lake Burley Griffin. Enjoy the morning tea and water stops along the way and spot the roving entertainers. The whole family can relax at Rond Terraces afterwards with more food, music and entertainment. The course is fully accessible to wheelchairs, mobility scooters and prams. Wheelchair accessible toilets are available at four positions along the course.

What to bring

Come prepared for rain or shine with sunscreen, warm layered clothes and wet weather gear. There will be coffee and food at Rond Terraces and water and fruit are given to all participants.

For a gold coin donation, our volunteers will look after your gear and have it ready for you to collect after you cross the finish line.

Wear red

Raise awareness of multiple sclerosis by wearing red or a creative costume of your choice. Prizes will be awarded for Best Dressed Individual in Red, Best Dressed Team, and Best Team in Uniform. Presentations start at 10am – you might be a winner!

The MS Fun Run timing system

If you want to strive for a personal best, a timing chip will be attached to your event bib when you receive it in the post. This chip will activate automatically as you cross timing mats at the start and finish lines, recording the time you take to complete the course. The fastest male and female runners in their age category will be announced at the presentations at 10am. Visit the website (hyperlink: http://www.mswalk.org.au/) on the afternoon after the run to check your time and see how you fared other participants.

Get involved

You can register, donate and raise your hand to volunteer online. There are a variety of voluntary positions to choose from. Most of them involve an early morning start for a duration of 3-6 hours. All volunteers are given the necessary equipment and support from MS staff and volunteer team leaders on the day.
