Whether you’re keen to pack a picnic and lounge by the lake, indulge in an evening of fine dining by candlelight or pop some champagne under the fireworks, here’s how to bring in the New Year in Canberra.


Civic Square and Garema Place

Fireworks and live entertainment in the centre of the city is the place to be for an alcohol-free and family-friendly night this New Year’s Eve.

Free and awesome, Bass In The Place is an all ages event that takes place each NYE in Garema Place. This year’s main act is Odd Mob, who you might know from ‘Is It A Banger?’. Tyson, Exposure and BNDR will also be performing.

The National Arboretum 

The National Arboretum is hosting their annual New Year’s Eve party and this year’s theme is Diamonds Are Forever. Step out on the red carpet for a night to remember.

Hotel Kurrajong

Hotel Kurrajong, centrally located in Barton, will be having two sittings for dinner throughout the night starting with incredible handmade canapés and a unique cocktail on arrival.

Polit Bar’s New Year’s Eve party hosted by Tammy Paks will be a night full of laughter and slightly crazy costumes. With games, dancing, nibbles and a glass of bubbly, this is the place to be if you’re keen for a wild night to begin the New Year.

Southern Cross Cruises 

Southern Cross Cruises are an incredible way to celebrate New Year’s either as a family or a couple as they have two dining sessions. The first will commence at 6.30pm and will finish at 9.30pm allowing time for families to view the 9pm fireworks from the lake. The second seating begins at 10.30pm and ends at 12.30am, including time to view the midnight fireworks, an array of canapes and a premium drinks package. This is a beautiful way to spend the night with that special someone looking onwards to the year ahead.

Canberra welcomes New Year with an explosion of a spectacular fireworks display in the city centre. Four vantage points for the state-of-the-art fireworks are listed below:

  • Civic Square: The square will be in party mode, presenting all ages concert with fantastic live local and national bands performance.
  • Garema Place: There will be a dance party that shows the best local and national performers.
  • Lake Burley Griffin: Here you can see the fireworks that will be launched from City Hill.
