ARIA Award winners Art vs. Science will be headlining Canberra city’s NYE celebrations this year.

Canberra will bid goodbye to the year that was and bring in 2018 as tens of thousands celebrate across two free concerts hosted in the city centre – New Year’s Eve in the City and Bass in the Place – Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay announced yesterday.

“The family friendly celebrations at New Year’s Eve in the City will be held in Civic Square and feature ARIA award-winning Australian band, Art vs. Science, supported by local bands and musicians the Brass Knuckle Brass Band and Harry Carman,” said Minister Ramsay.

“Having just released their new single ‘Wickoo’, ARIA Award winners Art vs. Science will be bringing their hits ‘Parlez Vous Francais’, ‘Magic Fountain’ and ‘Flippers’ to the festival live show to welcome 2018 with Canberra.”

Festivities will commence from 7pm and there will be food trucks on site to feed the hungry hoardes. Of course, midnight will see a cracking fireworks display too with an earlier session at 9pm for the littlies.

From 9pm in Garema Place, Bass in the Place will offer a free all-ages dance party. One of Australia’s top DJs, Ember (of Ministry of Sound fame) will get crowds dancing along with Canberra’s very own Blanke, DJ Clique and Peter Kiemann.

A new Late Night Rapid bus service in partnership with Uber will commence on Friday 8 December and finish up on New Year’s Day to help people get to and from home safely this festive season.

The service will run each Friday and Saturday night until New Year’s Day and offer an inexpensive and convenient public transport option to help Canberrans get to and from the city’s nightlife hotspots.

“We want everyone to have a happy and safe festive season so Transport Canberra has partnered with Uber to offer an easy, affordable and safe way to get around the city on Friday and Saturday nights in December,” said Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris.

The Late Night Rapid service is a modified version the Red and Blue Rapids and includes:

  • A modified Late Night Red Rapid service, between Gungahlin and Kingston, return.
  • A modified Late Night Blue Rapid service, between Belconnen and Tuggeranong, return via Civic and Woden.
  • Buses departing the City every 20 minutes, travelling to major town centres or bus stations along the route, and more frequent services during New Year’s Eve.

“By using the Uber app, customers can arrange pick up from their home to their nearest bus interchange (except Civic) and return home from that bus interchange at the end of the night. Passengers simply have to use the Uber app and they will automatically get $10 off their trip.

Uber will be providing these automatically discounted trips to Canberra bus interchanges from 2.00pm to 11.00pm and rides home from the Late Night Rapids from 9.00pm to 3.00am every weekend through to New Year’s Day.
