Sweet ChariTEA: Baby, it’s cold outside

Beatrice Smith

Imagine tables overflowing with all your favourite afternoon tea treats…Delicately decorated cakes. Colourful candy buffets. Biscuits and cookies galore. And oh don’t even start on the cupcakes! If this sounds like your ideal afternoon than read on because the Canberra Hospital Foundation’s upcoming charity event, Sweet ChariTEA is just around the corner and trust me – you need to put it in your calendar! Beatrice Smith caught up with event organiser Kartika Medcraft to find about more about this year’s inspiration and what you can expect on the menu…

Beatrice: We’ve become familiar with the annual Sweet ChariTEA event, but for those who aren’t quite sure what is it?

Kartika: Sweet ChariTEA is a local small business showcase that raises funds for local causes. A High Tea degustation with non-stop food, entertainment, live auction, fashion shows, exhibitions and more!

What will funds raised from Sweet ChariTEA go towards?

The Canberra Hospital foundation have many items on the SC bucket list this year, including a new breastfeeding chair for mums with sick bubs in the unit.

What can guests expect to indulge in at Sweet ChariTEA this year?

The degustation includes cupcakes galore, biscuits, decorated cookies, macarons, cream horns, fruit tarts, lemon slice, quiches, sandwiches, chicken and asparagus pastries, scones with jam & cream, decorated cakes, chocolate, and a beautiful Candy Buffet by Platinum Invitations & Candy Buffets – and all donated by local bakers, cake makers and passionate foodies.

This year’s theme is Baby, it’s cold outside; what’s different about Sweet ChariTEA 2015?

This year we have a beautiful Winter Wonderland theme and a varied entertainment and fashion show. This year we also have a magnificent Photographic Art exhibition and auction for the first time, and the entry will be decorated by End2End Events to make the theme come to life!

We are also doing a visual presentation that will remind guests why we do what we do, and the importance of the funds we raise, with some brave little special guests making an appearance on stage.

What fun table themes are happening this year?

Luscious Leopard! Snow White! Iced Iced VoVo, Christmas in July, Rockabilly Rose, Baroque & Roll, Rustic Romance to name a few. They are all so unique and perfectly glamorous.

What is your favourite memory from Sweet ChariTEA 2014?

This event is so precious to me and I have so many amazing memories. In 2013, we had a young lady with disability from CarersACT attend who got up on stage and sang Happy Birthday to her cousin with the microphone and it was just beautiful.

Last year, from an event manager point of view, we had the lovely Olivia from Diamond Boutique draw the raffle first prize on the stage (a $2000 voucher for her store) and the winner was there in the room! Of all the thousands of tickets sold over two months, the winner was at the event. It was fabulous and very exciting, not to mention rewarding, to experience.
