The biggest weekend of summer 2015

Beatrice Smith

You may not know it yet, but this weekend will be the biggest of Summer 2015.

Forget Christmas parties with stale sausage rolls and lukewarm Australian sparkling, this weekend will blow other events out of the water. If you’re not already, start clearing your calendar because it’s going to be epic. You need a game plan.

Here’s a little something we prepared earlier…

4pm – to market, to market

The weekend kicks off with a bang with Night Market Canberra bringing a curated selection of pop-up shops from local and interstate designers, live music, entertainment, a licensed bar and street eats to the leafy surrounds of Realm Park in Barton.

Get in early at Night Market Canberra and snaffle up the fashion, accessories, jewellery designs, homewares and lifestyle products before everyone else does. Then settle in with an organic juice or cocktail and nibble on food served up by local eateries from within the Realm Precinct.

6pm – festive festivities

Head into the city for some Christmas cheer at Christmas in the City – Canberra Celebrates – there’s more festive fun than you can poke a candy cane at! See the world-record breaking Christmas lights, marvel at the Gingerbread House and marvel at Pavillion X. Find out more about what’s on here.

10.30am – wet and wild

The City Slider is, for lack of a better term, badass. One of the coolest, most innovative ways to get communities out and moving in the fresh air, it will be a huge, flat slip n slide that will run along Cohen Street in Belconnen for roughly 325 metres of good, clean fun. Literally.

Everyone knows the best time to avoid sunburn is to cover up and seek shade during the hottest part of the day. Saturday’s forecast is a gelato-melting 31 degrees, so book tickets for an early session to avoid both long lines in heat and sunburn. This way, you don’t feel too guilty about not wearing a head-to-toe rashie and you get to pack the most into your day. Get your tickets here.

There’s also a smaller, 25 metre water slide for little kiddies under 110 centimetres that’s FREE, which will be to the side of the main City Slider. Remember to take your hat, bathers and copious amounts of sunscreen.

3pm – food and fashion frenzy

Once you’ve been home and dried off from your aquatic adventures it’s time to head to the next destination. Lucky you’ve worked up an appetite, because you’re gonna need that spare stomach!

The Forage was Canberra’s first dedicated Street Food event and remains a favourite – the last market for the year is happening in the Doma Group’s newest gem, Little National Hotel in Barton. From smoothies to Vietnamese Pho, hand made lemonade and a Malaysian food truck you’ll find it all here. Do your research in advance and target what you ABSOLUTELY NEED TO EAT.

The Little National will also be home to Hustle&Scout Twilight Fashion Markets, making it your ultimate one stop destination for food, music, drinks and fashion this Saturday. Work your way through a degustation on foot while listening to music by local bands and perusing jewellery, homewares and vintage fashion. In my opinion it would be prudent to stay for afternoon tea, dinner, dessert and twilight cocktails, but that’s just me.

11am – a bootscootin’ good time

Crack out the formerly ironic cowboy hat and don your fancy jeans, IT’S BBQ TIME! The Big Smoque AAA BBQ Festival promises live music, ribs, beer, dance demonstrations, wings, ribs, vintage American cars, kids activities and more ribs. It’ll tooth-pickin’, finger lickin’ fun in Civic Square. Get your tickets here (covers entry, entertainment by local artists, access to the BBQ pros & kids’ Hobby Horse craft activity).

Don’t stress about the promise of a 32 degree day – the Big Smoque promises enough ‘icy cold beverages’ to keep you chilled and besides, you have your cowboy hat! Bring the whole family or take someone on a highly unconventional first date – you can’t lose!

2pm – retail therapy

Now that your belly is (perhaps uncomfortably) full, it’s time to walk it off. The Old Bus Depot Markets Christmas Markets will bring the best hand made, small batch (and therefore unique) Christmas gifts and decorations Canberra has to offer to one place.

I’m willing to bet a BBQ-fuelled, focussed Canberran could get 55-85% of their holiday gift shopping done in a couple of hours with a keen eye and a few well earned scoops of boutique gelato and a couple of local handmade chocolates…what?

So good luck for the biggest weekend of this season so far. Lucky it’s nearly 2016…

Friday night there will be a wonderful Christmas show from Moochers Inc + Sass & Tease at the Polish white eagle club in Turner. It’s going to be awesome and it’s featuring sydney performers Fancy Piece. Who are just wonderful.
