The fashion of Fashfest: Andie Meredith

Posted on

Fashion. It’s so much part of our lives and truly fascinating to boot. Where do the ideas come from? The shapes, styles, fabrics, detailing and influences.

Canberra is a mini-metropolis of sensational fashion covering every genre—couture, trans-seasonal, ultra feminine, timeless, structural, street urban, futuristic and zero waste. The creativity of the many designers who work here, or who have been trained here, is mind boggling, despite Canberra’s relatively petite size.

Fashfest, a four-night showcase of Canberra fashion that will transform the nation’s capital, shines a massive spotlight on the work of more than 20 talented designers, mostly women but also a small number of fashion-saavy men—all with a connection to the ACT.

Over the coming weeks, in the lead-up to Fashfest, HerCanberra will profile some of the designers whose creations will be worn by local models on an amazing catwalk from 1 to 4 May, in front of hundreds of people each night. Today we profile local designer Andie Meredith.

ANDIE MEREDITH

Independent design label Andie Meredith is attracting a growing number of fans, and fast.

Andie continues to release collections of timeless feminine clothing, including signature fabric prints, which she designs herself and keeps exclusive to her label. The quality of her soft and organic natural fabrics is paramount. Fabrics flow and fall and are flattering on women of all shapes and sizes. Andie believes women need to feel comfortable, physically and emotionally, with the way they wear clothing. Her designs achieve the ultimate for many women—easy-to-wear but elegant and unique.

In Canberra, trans-seasonal clothing is a great investment and Andie’s collection for 2013, which will be on the Fashfest runway, not only carries you through the changes in climate, but through the requirements busy lives demand—corporate, casual, elegant or evening.

This latest collection includes a versatile cut out dress in organic cotton jersey with a dainty dragon fly print, easily worn with or without a belt or with a vest, jacket or just a scarf. Andie’s sculpt jacket is an interesting twist on the old ‘bomber style’, with its extra length sleeves giving a scrunched effect around the wrist. The ‘world ruling pant’ also features in the collection. Made of an electric blue tencel, these pants are destined to turn heads. Their timeless shape combined with luxurious fabric make it possible for you to ‘put on your armour, go out and take on the world,’ says Andie.

Andie Meredith also creates distinct accessories, including ‘spare sleeves’—the perfect addition to any winter wardrobe. You can layer the sleeves under t-shirts, cropped sleeve jackets or make them a feature accessory with a sleeveless dress. A loop scarf in orange rust and mink is another versatile accessory.

Upon graduating from Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) with a Bachelor of Design (Fashion) in 2008, Andie’s work was quickly noticed. She was selected as a Debut Designer to attend Melbourne’s Fashion Exposed, Debut Competition (2009) and soon began developing a network of independent women’s wear stores to stock her label, here in the ACT, but also in Tasmania and Victoria. A few short years later, in 2012, Andie was selected as a Finalist in the Canberra Business Point Awards, Creative and Design category.

Nature inspires Andie’s delicate prints and organic shapes. Women who wear this label appreciate design over ‘quick-to-arrive and quick-to exit’ trends. Each piece adapts well to your own method of styling. Each is a tactile, wearable wonder.

Akira and Easton Pearson are two designers who inspire Andie, although her work is not about replicating their collections by any means. And Andie is proud of her business philosophy, which centres on implementing sustainable design practices.

In Canberra you can buy Andie’s clothing through www.andiemeredith.com, at Shop Handmade in the city, or Bodhi Leaf on the lawns in Manuka. The Andie Meredith label is also available at the Spacebar Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart, and through Keona, Swan Hill, Victoria.
