Tigerair comes back to Canberra

Tigerair has announced that it will reinstate low-cost flights between Canberra and Melbourne on a daily basis from December 9 this year.

Tigerair is the low-cost subsidiary of Virgin and started operations in Australia in 2007.  The flight times and fares will be announced later this week when tickets  go on sale.  It currently offers one-way fares from Sydney to the Gold Coast from $49 and from Sydney to Melbourne from $75.

The move to return to Canberra after a five-year gap was announced by Tigerair Australia chief executive Rob Sharp with ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr saying the deal would likely inject $17 million into the local economy.

Mr Sharp said the airline had responded to customer demand.

“We are confident the new route will prove popular for our core market of budget and leisure travellers,” Mr Sharp said.

He also labelled it a “new-look” Tigerair.

“Our customers love low fares but they also want friendly service and on time flights. Tigerair Australia was rebranded in July 2013 and I’m thrilled to say that we are delivering on the promise of consistent delivery of affordable, reliable air travel with great customer service.”

Managing Director of Canberra Airport Stephen Byron said “Having a low cost airline operating into our National Capital will be a significant boost for our tourism industry both in our city and throughout the Region.  As well as allowing our community to travel to Melbourne (and onwards to Hobart, Adelaide and Perth) on low cost airfares, it will bring thousands of tourists to enjoy our restaurants, hotels, wineries, galleries and national institutions as well as our beaches, mountains and adventure activities.”

In 2015, it was announced that Tigerair Australia would begin operating its first ever international services to Denpasar from Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth from 2016.

Mr Byron noted that there were just 29 days left until the first Singapore Airlines flights to Wellington and Singapore – bringing international flights direct to the ACT for the first time. “This is another positive impetus to all of our efforts.”
