The ultimate last minute luxury staycation

Ashleigh Went

If I could live in any hotel in Canberra, ‘Chuck Bass’ style, it would be Little National.

Having stayed on Saturday night to preview their Staycation package, I can attest to just how heavenly this hotel is. Every detail, from the toiletries to the divine bedding to the lemongrass scented lobby, feels luxurious and bespoke.

You’d think, given the quality of the hotel, that it would cost a bomb – but you’d be wrong. Little National has rates that are quite affordable and very competitive, making it the perfect destination for a decadent little staycation.

If ever there was a perfect time for a staycation, that time is now. With The Forage on this weekend, Little National have thrown together a very impressive staycation package that will allow you enjoy everything that the hotel – and The Forage – have to offer.

Truth be told, I’d lusted over Little National’s hotel rooms for a while. Situated on a leafy street in Barton, directly across the road from the HerCanberra offices, I’d seen their huge widows with king size beds that fill the entire space. I was very excited about our staycation, to say the least.

We arrived at 12pm to fully enjoy the 24-hour package (which includes early check-in and late checkout).  Our room on the 5th floor was small – as I’d expected – but gorgeous. The space is minimalist but luxurious. The modest square footage is used purposefully with that plush king side bed taking centre stage.

And what a bed it is – hand over heart, the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. The sheets are crisp and super soft, the pillows are fluffy and the mattress itself is utter bliss (side note: you can purchase them from Little National).

This Forage kicks off at 2pm this Saturday 21 October, so you have plenty of time to check in, settle into your room and prepare yourself for the feast that’s about to come your way. Your staycation package comes with a $15 voucher to be redeemed at a Forage Food Market stall, so your only conundrum is where to start first.

Personally, I’ll be visiting some of my favourite returning vendors like Papa Laci – The Langosh Man, 2 Smoking Barrels, and Three Mills Bakery, plus some new and exciting additions including Kokomo’s, Love Street Bagels (who are bringing avo chips – yum), Little Pigs Ice Cream and Get Crackin’ Crème Brûlée. I’d recommend getting there nice and early to avoid running the risk of missing out.

Forage- 5Foot

The Forage wraps up at 7pm, so there’s plenty of time for you to peruse the stalls and stuff yourself silly.

The staycation package includes a complimentary beverage for two in the Little National lounge, a stunning space above the library. It’s the perfect way to settle back in for your stay: sit back, enjoy a drink and soak up the beautiful, sweeping views of Canberra.

As a massive movie fan, I was absolutely delighted to find that not only are all movies free, but there’s also a huge selection including new releases and some older classics. The TV screen is built into the bed frame, so you can curl up in that delightful, enormous bed and watch movies until you nod off into sweet slumber. Not only is the bed like sleeping on a cloud, but there’s also block out blinds so you can fall asleep in utter darkness.

With a lusciously late check out time of 12pm, you can afford to have a little sleep in. That being said, breakfast in Buvette Bistro wraps up at 10.30, and it’s an event that’s not to be missed. Don’t be tempted to go light after feasting at The Forage, the food here is simply too good. From the crispy bacon to the perfectly poached eggs, to the bircher muesli, pancake machine and croissants, everything is delicious and you’ll be hard pressed not to go back for seconds (or thirds). Breakfast – and tea and coffee – are included in your Staycation, so sit, sip and enjoy.

Your staycation also includes a 25% off Hale Spa voucher, which I strongly encourage you to use. Hale is the gym and spa located in the Brassey Hotel which feels less like your average gym, and more like a Scandi-inspired design Pinterest board. Your stay includes access to the gym at Hale, as well as Evo, which is located below Hotel Realm – so if you’d like to sweat off your food coma, now is the time.

All of this – plus undercover parking – will set you back a very reasonable $199. Although on this occasion we stayed courtesy of Little National Hotel, I would pay that in a heart beat for what was a blissful 24 hours. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so well rested or well fed.
