Wake up to a better Canberra

HerCanberra Team

Today saw the launch of the 2015 Canberra Community Sleepout with Canberrans challenged to sign up to wake up to a better Canberra.

On Friday 16 October, the Canberra community will come together for the third annual Canberra Community Sleepout. This year’s Sleepout event highlights family violence and the correlation to homelessness. Within the ACT, 29 per cent* of people experiencing homelessness are escaping family violence.

The Canberra Community Sleepout is a partnership between [email protected] and the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn, which deliver services that provide immediate assistance to those experiencing homelessness or who are at risk of homelessness.

Keynote speaker at this year’s event is Michael Costigan, founder of the Tara Costigan Foundation and uncle of Canberra’s Tara Maree Costigan who tragically passed away this year as a result of family violence.

The Canberra Community Sleepout is Canberra’s only family-friendly sleep out event. Throughout the night there will be live music, family activities, dynamic presentations about homelessness and domestic violence, interactive children’s activities and much more.

Sign up now, be part of a better future.

Every night in Canberra nearly 2,000 people are homeless, giving our city the second highest homelessness rate in all of Australia. By curling up in our sleeping bags for one night, we create awareness of this important issue and raise much needed funds to change the lives of those who are currently experiencing homelessness in our community and assist those at risk of becoming homeless.
