Canberra cafes to cool off in

HerCanberra Team

Sometimes you just need to head indoors to beat the heat.

While the breezy outdoor seats of your local might be the perfect place to sip a latte as autumn leaves fall or soak up the spring sunshine, summer demands somewhere ‘cooler’. Here are five places to take refuge from the heat.

As the name would suggest, this hidden gem is tucked away in one of Manuka’s most stylish hubs, Manuka Village, off Furneaux Street.

Serving an incredibly Instagrammable breakfast and lunch as well as Campos coffee and a range of cool drinks and homemade sodas, you’re able to enjoy the best of both worlds at Secret Garden thanks to the combination of air conditioning and an enormous skylight. Sunshine without the heat? Yes please.

Try: A freshly squeezed watermelon, Granny Smith apples and mint juice (pictured).

It’s an iced coffee kinda day!

Nestled in the heart of Canberra Centre, Greenhouse Food & Coffee Co spreads itself between a cute bench seated interior with a hanging garden to shady outdoor seating. Perfect for a post-shopping pick me up.

Try: One of their epic Iced Coffees topped with whipped cream. Decadent.

Greenhouse Food & Coffee Co. | Next to Kikki K on Level One of Canberra Centre | Mon-Thurs from 7.30 am – 5.30 pm, Fridays from 7.30 am – 9 pm, Saturday from 8 am – 5 pm and Sunday from 8 am – 4.30 pm | instagram.com/greenhousecoffeeco

One of the northside’s newest cafes, this café/restaurant hybrid is a coffee snob’s paradise as they’re backed by beloved ONA Coffee. If that wasn’t enough, Highroad’s bright, spacious (and air conditioned) interior will have design lovers swooning over the flowing wooden booths and duck egg green upholstery.

Try: Any of ONA’s special blends, which vary from day to day or why not try one of their quirky shakes—like the Crunchy Nut (pictured)?

With an interior painted in dark shades, this cult favourite is like a cool cave in summer, perfect for you to retreat to with the crossword and a cappuccino. Featuring artwork from local artists and a serious selection of in-house roasted coffee (and free parking!) this one isn’t just for locals.

Try: How about a fruit infused cold brew?

Two Before Ten Aranda | 68 Bandjalong Crescent, Aranda | Mon – Fri from 7 am – 4 pm | Saturday + Sunday from 8 am – 2 pm | instagram.com/twobeforeten

With a spacious interior boasting Canberra’s cutest neon sign, Double Shot has plenty of space (and air con) to help you survive the last month of summer.

While this is a very popular spot (especially on weekends) their very efficient staff will undoubtedly find you a spot as soon as possible, so don’t be put off by a wait list at the door.

Try: A freshly made Detox Juice, packed with beetroot, green apple, carrot, lemon, ginger and turmeric.
