Five delicious local Easter treats you must taste

Posted on

We live in a foodie town, so it’s no surprise that there’s no shortage of delicious Easter treats on offer around Canberra. Today, we take a look at five droolworthy local offerings.

The Golden Egg

Oh my. Oh my. Oh my. I am already planning the next few days around a trip to Ricardo’s in Jamison so I can get my hands on one of these babies. It’s a Cherry ripe chocolate egg filled with caramelised white chocolate, hazelnut & salted caramel and I don’t think Easter will be complete without it. Actually, I don’t think my life will be complete without it. Must have.

Hot cross bun macarons

So, I’ll let you in on a little secret…I don’t really like hot cross buns. I KNOW! But, I had my first ever Hot Cross Bun Macaron from Lu’mon at The Forage on the weekend and it was all kinds of amazing. The crisp shell, the soft inside, the intense spice. Yum. Yum. Yum. Six macarons are $15 ($2.50 each) or $20 delivered. $35 delivered for a dozen.

Easter Penguins

Why should the Easter Bunny get all the credit, when Lindsay and Edmunds’ Easter Penguins have got so much attitude! At $65 each, they’re not cheap (but at 300g they’re big enough to feed two or three chocoholics), and they truly are edible art.

You can get them – and the rest of the range, including mini bunnies, teddy ‘lollipops’ and more – from one of their four Canberra Easter locations: Fairbairn kitchen and retail store; Canberra Centre; Majura Park Shopping Centre and Cooleman Court. You can also pop along to Shop Handmade for their treats.

Hot Cross Buns

So, having declared my hand when it comes to my indifference towards Hot Cross Buns, I know that some people go a little bit crazy for them. So, where can you get the best buns? We asked our readers, and a few names kept cropping up: Bruno’s Truffels in Mawson; Dream Cuisine in Fyshwick,  Erindale Cakery Bakery, and Knead Patisserie at Belconnen Markets, to name just a handful. Those babies below? They’re Broadbean Catering’s Apple, lemon, golden raisin and candied ginger Hot Cross Buns and you can find them at the National Museum of Australia’s Cafe.

For those who like their buns gluten free, Deeks in Pearce got a whole lot of shout outs, and vegans should head to Sweet Bones Bakery Cafe in Braddon or to ANU Food Co-Op Shop and Cafe for Veganarchy Baking’s delicious Spiced Hot Cross Buns and Chocolate Chip Hot Cross Buns.

Chocolate (or Lime Coconut Zing) chocolate bunny-pops

If you’re going to go the traditional bunny, then make it one of these well dressed fellas from Robyn Rowe Chocolates. In traditional Milk or Lime Coconut Zing, they come complete with sparkly waistcoats. ‘Fresh, complex and divine’ are just some of the words Robyn’s customers used to describe them.
