Six hangover foods you can eat today

HerCanberra Team

With so many amazing new bars opening around Canberra, chances are you’ll be having a few dusty mornings sometime soon.

So we’ve rounded up six hangover foods you can eat to heal your head. Yep, go out and get one of these babies and feel alive again.

Dirty Bird

We all know KFC as a hangover cure, but if you’re craving something more pleasing to the tastebuds, get yourself to Grease Monkey. The ‘GFC’ (Greasy Fried Chicken) is finger licking good, served with mash and gravy and coleslaw, and the Dirty Bird is another cheeky nod to the colonel’s secret herbs and spices. Breakfast is also firmly in the ‘hangover cure’ camp, with the ‘Greasy Breakfast’ burgers — the ‘Jump Start’ and the ‘Automatic’ — including maple bacon, HP sauce and hash browns.

Grease Monkey | 19 Lonsdale Street, Braddon  | Open 11am til late New Year’s Day |

I literally know someone who wrote and performed a song about Yarralumla Kebabs and how amazing they are. The other bonus? They’re always open on New Year’s Day.

Grab one of these bad boys and a litre of cold water from the supermarket next door, wander down to the lake and have a nap in the shade. You’re welcome.

Turkish Halal Pide House Yarralumla | 45 Nova St, Yarralumla | Open seven days, 9am until 8.30pm |

After a slightly more refined hangover remedy? Drag your sorry self to Monster kitchen and bar for their 38-hour pork neck bao with cucumber kimchi. A soft, slightly sticky and slightly sweet flatbread and wonderfully crispy pork neck patty that comforts the stomach, while a kick of chilli does wonders for a slightly heavy head. Order several.

Monster kitchen and bar | NewActon Nishi, 25 Edinburgh Avenue, New Acton | Open 6.30am to 1am every day |

Mr Papa’s Chanchito

A drool-inducing Pork Belly Sandwich, the Chanchito is Mr Papa’s version of the Peruvian staple Sanguche de Chicharrón. We’re talking slow-cooked and juicy pork belly, golden-fried sweet potato, Creole salsa and home-made chillies all served in ‘Pan Frances’ Peruvian-inspired bread made by local bakers. So good.

Mr Papa | The Hamlet, 16 Lonsdale Street, Braddon | Open for lunch and dinner today |

Mac n Cheese

Mac n Cheese from Capitol Bar and Grill at QT Canberra.

Mac n Cheese from Capitol Bar and Grill at QT Canberra.

It’s the ultimate comfort food…oodles of carbs smothered in cheese. But this is no ordinary mac n cheese…this is Maccheroni con Formaggio e Tartufo — Black Truffle, White Parsley, Reggiano, Asiago, Taleggio, Gruyere Cheese Sauce, Gratinated with Pangrattato. If your hungover brain is struggling to cope with all those ‘foodie’ words, just take our word for it – it’s delicious and it will cure all ills.

Capitol Bar and Grill | 1 London Circuit, New Acton | Open 6.30am til late seven days |

Hopscotch's Lamb 'Souva'

Hopscotch’s Lamb ‘Souva’

Need some veggies with your meat and carbs? Head to Hopscotch for some ‘wood-fire wizardry’ (and maybe some ‘hair of the dog’) and an upmarket take on the traditional lamb souvlaki, their Lamb ‘Souva’. Slow-cooked mouth-watering meats, hummus, greek salad, feta, and tzatziki all wrapped in house-made flatbread. Delish.

Plus, the team understand the need for a good recovery party – there’ll be DJs and live music playing all day on New Year’s Day. Dark sunglasses optional.

Hopscotch | 5 Lonsdale St, Braddon | Open 11am til late, seven days |

Mucho Burrito

It’s hard to go past Mexican for hangover fare. Tacos, nachos, fajitas…they’re all fantastic ‘day after’ food. But for our money, it’s the Mucho Burrito: pulled seasoned beef, pibil pork, chipotle chicken, chili con carne, Mexcian rice, frijoles especial, blended cheese, smoky salsa, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream and chilli salt. Just put everything on there…

Beach Burrito Company | City Walk, Civic| Open New Year’s Day 11am to 10pm |
