Pialligo Estate gives you a taste of Christmas in July

While it may not be December, ’tis certainly the season to be cosy. 

And while the Europeans enjoy their summer, why not borrow some of their unique festive cheer?

Pialligo Estate’s Christmas in July dinner will be the chance to do just that, with an evening of yuletide festivities, wine and, of course, food.

Pialligo Estate’s French-born Sommelier, Frederique ‘Freddie’ Raimbaud (pictured), explains that she’s been working on the project since January, as it holds special significance for her.

“Christmas in July is very important for me because as a French person I grow up with a cold white winter Christmas,” she explains. “When I moved to Australia I missed it a little bit, so some friends organised a Christmas in July for me and for almost 10 years now we have celebrated every July.”

As the cherry on top of the Christmas pudding, so to speak, there will be a Christmas Tree as well as presents for all the guests.

Freddie explains that her French heritage has influenced the menu while her taste as a sommelier has influenced the partnership with Rutherglen’s Cofield Wines.

“I choose Cofield because of their Sparkling Shiraz which has the rich, warming feeling of the Durif Black Grape and their Muscat Topaque, which has the really unique flavours of luscious raisin and plum cake,” she says. “It’s like a showcase of the Rutherglen region – they’re wines you won’t find in Canberra.”

As for that French-inspired menu, the centrepiece will be an authentic Yule Log dessert, which is traditionally served near Christmas in places such as France, Belgium and Switzerland. Resembling a miniature log, the sweet roulade is known as a Buche de Noel.

All up, five courses will be on offer, all matched with Cofield Wines. Winemaker Damian Cofield will also be joining the festivities to share his vineyard’s philosophies and processes.
