Pie Time festival to return to the Southern Pie-lands

Alexa Sommerville

How many pie puns can be made in 350 words? Certainly more than 3.14.

It’s downright un-Australian not to appreciate a good pie, and it’s about pie time there existed a festival that celebrated what is arguably the most Aussie food.

The Southern Highlands boasts some of Australia’s best pies and throughout the month of June, the region will show its love for the great Aussie pastry with Pie Time, a series of mouth-watering pie-themed events and festivals.

First up, there’ll be a com-pie-tition for home bakers to chefs alike to pit pie against pie, with six categories including red meat, white meat, vegetarian, seafood, sweet and an artisan entry.

For those more inclined to eat than bake, you can enjoy a dinner under the big pie in the sky to commence celebrations, with a seven-course pie-themed dinner matched with award-winning local pinot wines. But if baking your own pastries is more up your alley, don’t pie-crastinate over the pie cooking classes on offer, where you can master the art of everything from a good old chunky steak to lemon meringue.

If you love big pies and you cannot lie, the two-day PieFest will showcase everything from the winners of the Best Pie Competition to pie cooking demonstrations, foodie and market stalls, and children’s activities.

To sauce or not to sauce? That is the question. Tomato, BBQ, mustard, mushy peas… if you’re torn between condiments, local sauce producer Kieltys Irish has created a special Pie Time sauce that will be the perfect accompaniment to any flaky-crusted treat.

There’ll also be pie tours with Kombis, army Jeeps and push bikes, paddock to plate experiences, pie eating and throwing competitions, brewery tours and a Great Pie Drive for Meals On Wheels.

As for accommodation, stay-cations are out and pie-cations are in at several of the Southern Highlands’ best hotels, which are offering complete Pie Time experiences including ‘Dine with a Pie’ through to B&B and self-contained options.

Don’t miss your chance to visit the picture-perfect Southern Pie-lands and celebrate all things pie.
