Wine Not: The Orange Wine Festival is coming

Every year, just three hours drive from Canberra, the picturesque Orange Wine Region celebrate their burgeoning industry.

With temperatures averaging around 21 degrees and sunny and the fruit trees in full bloom, Orange in October is a foodie’s dream spring road trip. Add in a wine festival and you have something to keep you going through the remainder of the cold Canberra winter.

The annual Orange Wine Festival showcases wines made with grapes grown in the region over one enormous week in the picturesque countryside with more than 80 events taking place from Friday 13 to Sunday 22 October. The centrepiece of the Festival is the Orange Wine Show, which is where the fun begins, as it’s a great place to ‘try before you trip’ out to the vineyards themselves.

“After the judges have left, the public will be able to sample the trophy winning wines at the Orange Wine Show Tasting,” explains Justin Jarrett of the Orange Region Vignerons Association. If meandering through wine tastings doesn’t whet your whistle, how about a Wine and Food Night Market in Robertson Park that sees over 50 food and wine stalls and around 5000 visitors each year?

There will even be a little taste of Canberra mixed into the Festival when darling of the Braddon foodie scene eightysix comes to Heifer Station Woolshed for an “intimate dinner with share plates and matching wine”.

If you’re not keen on the drive, you could take the Vino Express from Sydney. No, seriously.

The Vino Express, which is a real train by the way, departs Sydney on Friday 20 October “for a weekend of vinous and culinary discovery” and includes accommodation, transfers and dining experiences with the train returning on Sunday.

Lastly, but certainly not least, the third annual Wine in the Vines will depart from the Orange Visitors Information Centre on a journey of exploration through many of the region’s famous cellar doors and vineyards.

“Guests will be wined and dined throughout the region, as they are transported from one vineyard to another,” explains Justin.

The week’s festivities include a range of events designed to entice the consumer to explore the region’s wines, cellar doors, restaurant and cafés.

Quite simply, the Orange Wine Festival is a foodie (and wino) dream.

As Justin explains,“the event focuses on the cool climate elegance of the region’s wines, however, the region’s food, produce, growers and chefs will play a significant role”.

To give Canberra a taste of what they can expect at the Festival, The Orange Regions Vigneron’s and HerCanberra invite you to attend the launch of the 2017 Orange Wine Festival Program in Canberra at Hotel Hotel on Thursday 17 August.
