Valentine’s Day in CBR

Posted on

Roses are red, violets are blue; Saturday is Valentine’s Day, so here’s what to do…

Pack a picnic

Gather your favourite picnic goodies and pack a hamper along with the rug and enjoy the outdoors this Saturday.

CSO Shell Prom

We reckon this has got to be one of the best ways to spend Valentine’s Day—(no date required). Whether you’re shacked up in love or have a night out with the girls, an evening on the lawns Government House is one pretty sweet way to enjoy the day of love as the Canberra Symphony Orchestra invokes the intoxicating music of the British Isles in the 33rd Shell Prom Concert.

Held in conjunction with the National Multicultural Festival (MCF), the concert program, themed A Touch of Tartan, includes favourites such as Scottish Fantasy, the Hebrides Overture, orchestral renditions of Danny Boy, and more. You can discover the program and find out more here.

Valentine’s Day Recital: Love is in the air at the Carillion

Love is the air this Saturday evening when lead carillionist Lyn Fuller and studen carillionist Anna Wong perform a special Valentine’s Day recital at the Carillion on Aspen Island. With big hits including Hey Big Spender, Sweet Caroline, and Skip to my Lou, it’s an evening not to be missed. Pack a hamper and picnic rug, and relax by the lake at sunset for this very special Valentine’s Day performance from 7pm to 8pm at Aspen Island, Parkes.

Pretty Woman at Ben and Jerry’s Openair Cinema

You won’t want to miss Ben and Jerry’s Openair Cinema‘s Valentine’s Day screening of Pretty Woman at Canberra’s central lakeside venue on Patrick White Lawns (near the National Library) come Saturday evening. The Jar Bar will be serving up some specially created Valentine’s Day cocktails including ‘Romance on Rodeo Drive’, a delightful ‘Pretty Woman’ twist on the Long Island Iced Tea with mixed berries that is sure to set hearts racing. Enjoy the seductive tones of Producer and DJ, Beat Taskforce, whose music draws influence from 90s R&B, alternative hits and future beats.

Lovebirds can also share a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream or one of the Rocketboy wood-fired pizzas whilst snuggled with a rug under the stars. Snuggle up in comfort and style as deckchairs, bean loungers and blankets can be hired as part of the ticket packages available. Valentine’s Day tickets include a glass of Giesen wine or non-alcoholic beverage on arrival. Volkswagen Polo Class tickets also include reserved bean lounger seating, a blanket, a drink and a Ben & Jerry’s shortie. With music by day and movies by night, Openair Cinemas support local musicians and play a mix of favourite cult classics and hot new release films. Check their website for full details and bookings.

Make it about him

When it comes to Valentine’s Day, this Saturday why not make it all about him and surprise him with one or two of these local goodies? Bronwen Stead has done the hard work for you…

Does he love a good belly laugh? Tickets to the Canberra Comedy Festival could be just the thing to make him smile this Valentine’s Day.

If he loves his four wheels, then why not spoil him with a deluxe (car) wash at Waves?

Keep with the theme of live acts and take a look at the Canberra Theatre Centre’s 2015 program. Book him tickets to see Village People in March, Monkey Magic when it arrives in April or revisit the days of the bushranger with Kelly in June.

Is Top Gun his favourite movie? Maybe he has childhood dreams of being a pilot? Give him the next best thing—the chance to pilot a jet flight simulator ride. You don’t even have to leave Canberra and he can fly to wherever he likes.

The Cock & Crown

For the dapper gent, treat him to the oasis of gentlemanly calm at Groomed in Braddon or if he prefers to crack a coldie and hang with the blokes then The Cock and Crown is probably more his thing.

Treat him to a little TLC and pampering at Mawson’s Let’s Be Natural, Foot & Thai in Belconnen or if you’re southside—Sawsadee.

But if he’s a die hard football fanatic, then season tickets to the Canberra Raiders or UC Brumbies will certainly top the list.

Or for you…

Some local bling

Take his (or her) hand and lead the way to KIN Gallery for some Valentine’s Day shopping on Saturday. We promise you’ll fall in love (with the beautiful pieces on show).
