Tonight, the efforts of those united to end violence against women and children in Canberra were recognised at the 2016 ACT Violence Prevention Awards.

Five organisations and individuals have been presented the Violence Prevention Awards across five categories including the Community Sector, Education, Media, the Private Sector, Sport and a Cross Category said ACT Minister for Women Yvette Berry tonight.

“I would like to congratulate the Domestic Violence Crisis Service Champions [including Adam Shirley, Amanda Whitley, Alan Tongue and Christian Leallifano], the Women’s Centre for Health Matters, Behind Closed Doors, Ernst and Young, and Brumbies Rugby for all the work they do to address violence against women and in taking direct action to bring about much needed change,” Minister Berry said.

“We received 28 high calibre nominations for the awards across the five categories, and it was an unenviable task to choose the winners. All nominees should feel rightly proud of their efforts.

“The way our community talks about domestic violence is changing. That change is being influenced by many Canberran’s who are using their networks and skills to help our community have an informed conversation about this difficult issue.”

“There is so much valuable work that is already being done to combat violence against women and children.”

The ACT Government has committed an additional $21.4 million in the recent budget to address family violence.

“Because of this funding, we will now be able to provide more coordinated and effective support for victims, hold perpetrators to account, challenge community attitudes which silently endorse violence against women and children.

“This is the single largest new funding initiative in the ACT’s history on addressing family violence in our community”.
