Are You A Control Freak?

Chrissy Dupé

Don’t panic, it could be a good thing…

Does the thought of a life without lists leave you a cold sweat? The mere mention of a last minute change of plans send you into a tailspin? Do you have an overwhelming urge to ‘supervise’ others, to make sure they’re doing things the right way?

You, my friend, may well be a control freak…

Here’s the part where I’m supposed to present you with a list of irrefutable reasons why you should stop being this way and just learn to ‘let go’.

Maybe suggest some self-awareness mantras… breathing techniques… throw some inspirational quotes at you… give you a link to some mindfulness meditations to help you live in the moment and trust in the universe.

Because being a control freak is BAD with a capital ‘B’. Right?

Well, no. Not if you learn how to use it in the right way…

So, rather than tell you to try to change who you are, I want you to EMBRACE your inner control freak.

Because once you learn to focus it on the right things, you can start using it to your advantage in a major way.

Being able to control situations to affect outcomes is actually an amazing skill, and something you should be proud of.

You can control things.

Can you see just how powerful that is?

Many of the world’s most powerful and influential people are control freaks. The only difference is that they’ve figured out how to focus it on the right things – the kind of things that have catapulted them all the way to success.

The truth is, despite what you’ve always been told, rather than being something you should be ashamed of, your inner control freak is actually your secret super power…

And, if you’re like most people with a strong inner control freak, up until now, it’s power has probably been totally misdirected.

Are you a control freak? Take the quiz and find out.

Ok, at this point you might be thinking: Who IS this crazy woman? What is she on about? Is she serious?

Yes, I am (serious, not crazy).

Are You A Control Freak? Chrissy Dupé - Control Freak and Proud

I’ve been a Grade-A control freak my whole life… but I wasn’t always proud of it. In fact, a couple of years ago it nearly ruined my life…

My ‘freak’ (as I affectionately refer to it), used to make me try to control literally hundreds of things a day… many of which were not helpful. Some of which were self-destructive. And most of which were not even within my power to control in the first place.

Getting through a queue faster, getting frustrated at other drivers on the road, stressing about running late for an appointment, worrying about what other people thought of me, straightening (and re-straightening) the couch cushions, trying to change other people’s behaviour, having the final say on pretty much everything, trying to be perfect, doing everything humanly possible to avoid failure. The list goes on…

Sounds crazy doesn’t it? That’s because it is…

You know what I’m talking about, right?

Do you find yourself spending way too much time trying to control a bunch of stuff that doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, and that isn’t getting you any closer to your big picture goals?

I was too.

Until some really awful things happened in my life, forcing me to take a huge step back and think about what I really wanted…

I realised that my freak was completely out of control… it was making me believe that I could and should be able to control the things that were happening to me.

It was wrong, of course. But back then I didn’t know how to re-focus it on controlling the things that were in my power to control… and that would help me get through the worst time in my life.

I was constantly anxious, overwhelmed, frustrated…and just plain miserable.

I knew I had to get in control of it, before it ran me straight into the ground.

So I started to test out some simple ways to focus it only on what mattered… and, importantly, what was actually within my power to control… that is, the precise things that I now realised would make me happy and let me start living my ideal life.

It worked.

Since I learned to control my freak, I’m happier, healthier and more motivated than I’ve ever been.

Now, I focus exclusively on controlling the surprisingly few things that actually matter to me… and letting go of the unimportant, the unhelpful and the self-destructive.

Want to find out how I did it, and learn how to focus your freak on what counts?
