Everything you need to know about Cross Country Skiing

Posted on

At this time of year, the response I get from friends when trying to organize to catch up on the weekends is fairly consistent: “Sorry, I am going to the snow”.

I have been to the snow a few times, but never with the same concerted and regular effort as others, and definitely nowhere near enough to feel competent. In order to better understand this hobby, I caught up with Wendy from Snow Sports ACT to discuss all things snow sport.

What would a newbie to the Canberra region (or snow sports) need to know about our ski season?

Australia has a short snow season for skiing or snowboarding at resorts such as Thredbo and Perisher and even shorter cross country season as you have to wait for enough snow to fall on the cross country trails at Perisher. Typically you can only cross country ski July to September.

The Snowy Mountains are two hours from the south of Canberra and makes for a great day trip or you can stay in Jindabyne or on mountain for a longer stay.

What are the skill levels required?

If you can walk you are fit enough to cross country ski! Cross country is easy to learn and you can take it at your own pace. Cross country skiing is a sport for everyone from young to old. You will find there are skiers of all fitness levels out there enjoying the trails.

All you need is skis, boots and poles and access to the snow. Start at your own pace and gradually develop your skills. Start on the flat before progressing to gradual uphills and downhills. It can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be.

The low impact nature of cross country skiing means it can also be great for rehabilitation from injury, however, please consult your doctor or physiotherapist for advice on appropriate activities and whether classic or skating would be most suitable for your circumstances.

How is our season going?

The snow came a little late in the season but there is currently good snow coverage on the closest cross country trails to Canberra, at Perisher. There is a snow cam and daily trail report available on the Perisher X Country website.

You should be able to cross country ski till the end of September.

What’s the best thing about snow sports in our region?

Snow sports is a sport for life and can be enjoyed with friends and family. It is a very social sport. The snow is only a short trip and makes for a great day trip as well.

Have we piqued your interest?

If it sounds like something you would like to try, SnowSports ACT run a couple of come and try cross country days (in July each year – make a note for 2018!) for people new to the sport. The day involves a 2 hour lesson and tour of the Perisher cross country trails.

You will greatly benefit from a basic lesson to improve efficiency in your cross country skiing. Weight transfer, coordination and balance are the key skills that are taught.

If you are planning a trip, two great websites to consult before heading to the snow for a cross country ski are discoverxcski.com and perisherxcountry.org for tips on equipment and getting started in this fantastic sport.
