Fudie: good food, fast.

Amanda Whitley

At a women’s business breakfast in 2013, I met a gorgeous young Canberra woman who – just like me – had found herself an accidentally-successful entrepreneur. Katie Geus told me that she was a student midwife and personal trainer, but had started a little sideline making healthy ready-meals for friends…and it kinda snowballed.

Two years on, Fudie has burst out of Katie’s mum’s tiny kitchen and is now utilising Hotel Realm’s commercial premises, and its team of chefs, to serve nutritious and delicious meals to busy people. In the past year, I’ve regularly ordered Fudie meals; not because I’m ‘dieting’ but because half the time I get home from a long day of working and kid-wrangling and I just don’t have the energy to cope with preparing a nutritious meal. Having fresh ‘heat and eat’ options in the fridge take the pressure off.

We caught up with Katie to ask her five quick questions about Fudie.

So, where did Fudie spring from?

Fudie started in my Mum’s tiny kitchen! I was working as a personal trainer, training for my first triathlon and had just started my Bachelor of Midwifery. As a first year midwife, it was required that I be on call for nine months of my degree so I found it hard to balance all of my clients with everything going on. I decided to put them on a 30-day challenge until I could figure out what to do and included a shopping list and recipes for them to follow. During the first week, a couple of my clients offered me the job of cooking for them when I had time, for some extra money. They loved the meals and soon their friends were asking if I could cook for them as well and well, the rest is history!

What are your guiding principles?

This business is an extension of myself, and everything I believe in. When I develop these recipes I do so with my own ideals in mind. From early on I was able to see these ideals were shared with many others. I want to eat a balanced meal that I know is nutrient dense, I don’t want to have to feel guilty about any potentially hidden ingredients, I want it to taste great and I also want it prepared and ready for me to eat during a busy day.

In addition to these principles, I love supporting local business, which is why we have so many on board! The Fix Cold Pressed Juices, our nutritious treats from Guilt Free Goodness, our family owned meat and vegetables suppliers, nutritionists and personal trainers and gyms! Not only are you supporting Fudie when you come to us but many other wonderful health promoters within our community!

What are some of the meals that people will find on the Spring menu?

At present, we have eight meals, two breakfasts, cold pressed juices and snacks on our menu! My favourite is the sweet potato mash, four-hour cooked and marinated chicken with fresh vegetables (I love this after training in the evening!), the Thai beef salad (tastes just like take out!), the Barramundi with unfried rice, and for breakfast, I love our muesli with fresh berries, nuts and natural yogurt. We will be expanding this menu and adding delivery in the very near future.

How is Fudie different from other portion-controlled meal options?

There is no hiding the fact there are plenty of options out there for anyone looking for the convenience of portioned meals; however I’m not trying to take on the big guys at business, I’m simply here to take the confusion out of food and spread the word – whole foods are best! I have created a menu of fresh home-style meals using only locally sourced ingredients cooked in their most natural state. No preservatives, additives, flavours or colours and you pick it all up fresh.

Are these meals designed for people who are dieting? Or is it more the person who is busy and wants to be putting good stuff in their body?

Diet is a banned word in our house! I am simply selling the tools to help you make changes and build a healthier lifestyle. You don’t have to have everything on the menu, but if you forget to eat breakfast every morning, we are here. If you don’t have time to make dinner after training, we are here for you too!
