Beauty how to: winterproof your skin!

Samara Gentle

Changing your skin care routine both in the lead up to and during winter is always a wise decision; the change in conditions can take a huge toll on your skin.

Firstly, when the skin’s natural barrier is weakened, moisture is lost and the surface layers of the skin crack easily. If you find your skin is a lot drier in winter, this is why.

If you don’t currently, you need to start moisturising more often in winter…and I don’t just mean your face, your whole body needs extra moisture!

One of my favourite all over body moisturisers is Nivea Rich Nourishing Body Lotion, which you can pick up from around $7 at most chemists and supermarkets.

It’s also important to remember those extra sensitive areas such as your lips and hands. Blistex Lip Conditioner is an absolute staple and is widely available or if you like something a little prettier than invest in locally made glosses from Lips by Tanja.

If you don’t wear gloves when it’s cold, always have a good quality hand cream in your bag or at your desk and apply after each trip outside.

I recommend trying Jurlique’s range of hand creams, they come in different scents such as rose, lavender, citrus and jasmine and are a superior quality. For those who like to support local, then you can’t go past Ash & Clay’s divine Hand Repair cream. Your hands will thank you!

Ash & Clay also have a beautiful range of serums, scrubs and moisturisers perfect for winter-proofing your skin from top to toe.

As always, being kind to your skin isn’t just about the products you put on it. Keep up your water intake (even if you might not feel as thirsty in winter, you still need it!), get a decent night’s sleep as often as possible, and kick those cancer sticks to the curb!

What are your favourite products to combat the cold weather?

I picked up the Dermalogica Dry Skin Kit on the weekend from DJs and can’t stop raving about it. It was around the $50 mark and you get 5 travel sized products to test out on your skin. The mask included has noticeably sloughed off the dry patches I had across my forehead, cheeks and around my mouth within a day, and now it’s just a matter of maintaining it and incorporating/replacing these products in my everyday skin care regime. Can recommend!
