Beauty products we’re loving right now

Laura Peppas

At the HerCanberra headquarters, conversation tends to shift to beauty products quite often.

You might call us kinda beauty-obsessed. Whether we’re complimenting each other’s new lippie or one of us is on the hunt for the perfect foundation, new beauty trends are a hot topic, particularly with the change of season. After Canberra Centre’s beauty workshop with Sigourney Cantelo (a woman who seems to look effortlessly gorgeous all the time) the HerCanberra team went into overdrive and were inspired to put our faces on the line to test out what’s new in Centre. Though the focus differed for each person (one of us wanted bigger brows, another was after the perfect shade of blush) one mission remained: to find the must-have products for this season.

I like a fairly natural look, so for me having beautiful, luminous skin is the key. When you’ve got glowing skin then you really only need a light touch of mascara with a bright lip to feel made up. For my consultation at Mecca Cosmetica, the lovely Lauren started by applying La Mer products on my skin (having only read about these, it was a treat to actually try them!) She started with the Mecca Cosmetica Lift From Within Illuminating Primer mixed with the NARS Pro-Prime Light Optimising Primer to create the perfect base. She then used as foundation the NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser with a NARS blusher and bronzer, highlighting my cheekbones and brow bone with the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette. The end result? My skin looked fresh and glowy but still natural, which is perfect for spring. Oh, and I’ve also found a new favourite lippie – NARS Grace Audacious Lipstick.

Focus: Lipstick

If I ever want to change my look but don’t have time or money to shop for a new outfit, I get a new lipstick instead. One of my favourite brands is MAC because their lipsticks tend to be moisturising, particularly the Cremesheen range. But if you want a lipstick that lasts, the Viva Glam matte range is incredible. Best of all, all proceeds from the sale of this range go towards helping women men and children living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Julie at the MAC counter applied the Viva Glam 1 shade on me, which is one I would wear during the day with minimal eye makeup and a pair of jeans and T-shirt, or at night with a heavier eye for a more dramatic look.

Focus: Brows

I’ve never had big eyebrows – they’ve always been pretty sparse, actually. Which was fine in the 1990s, when thin and over-plucked was in vogue, but now thanks to Cara Develigine and those trademark bushy brows, I’m kind of screwed. So when I visited the Benefit counter in Myer I had only one thing on my mind: big, bold brows. Luckily Benefit is known for being an expert in this area, so I knew I was in good hands. To start, Marion prepped my skin with the Professional Primer, adding to the look with a natural foundation and cheek tint for a natural look. Next Marion carefully applied shaping kit Brow Zings to my eyebrows followed by Gimme Brow, a brush-on fibre gel which adheres to skin and hair, creating instant brows. The result was pretty impressive considering what she was working with! Ok, so I’m still no Develigine, but the fact that I actually have prominent brows now is a win. While big and bushy is in, I’m never parting with this product.

Focus: Eyeshadow

I wanted to experiment with dramatic eye shadow colours – especially ones that brought out my eyes. Having dabbled in purples before I was really excited when Brie from Mecca Cosmetica explained NARS’ new Dual Intensity range to me – a series of eyeshadows whose pigment can be intensified with the addition of water to your brush. Framing the eyes is really important with a dramatic smoky eye so Brie made sure to fill in my brows with an Hourglass pencil and line both the upper and lower waterlines with different colours – metallic navy and matte beige respectively. The look was finished off with bright blush (again in NARS’ Dual Intensity range), La Dolce Vita lipstick (the perfect nude) and NARS Audacious Mascara, which sold out all over the world when it was released – for good reason!

Visited: Aveda

Focus: Foundation

My skin is quite dry most of the time but I’ve got an oily t-zone, so I struggle finding a foundation that suits my skin. The girls at Aveda prepped my skin by cleansing and exfoliating first, before using a serum and an eye cream, which they pressed in, rather than rubbing. Next they used a hydrating cream, before applying their Mineral Tinted Moisturiser in ‘Sweet Tea’ for the foundation, as well as the Inner Light concealer and powder in ‘Honey’. After walking out of the store, my skin felt hydrated without the oily t-zone. This foundation has great coverage but it’s quite light for summer, without the oily residue that builds up. I’m sold!
