Beauty Roadtest: Heartworks Lomi Lomi Hawaiian Massage

Posted on

I love a good massage…and my knotted-up-from-too-much-time-at-the-computer shoulders need the attention regularly.

For me, massages are usually confined to the ‘physical’ – not to mention painful- but recently, Suz from Body Temple in Griffith invited me along to try a Heartworks Lomi Lomi Hawaiian Massage – a treatment that she described as being a massage for the body AND mind.

So, what is it? Let’s break it down.

Lomi Lomi is the Hawaiian word for Massage. The literal translation is “to push, pull and knead”. Lomi Lomi is derived from ancient Polynesian methods of healing, where bodywork/massage was an important part of life, and a preventer of illness and disease.

Heartworks is a healing system which brings balance, restoration and heart-opening peace to the body. It is a style of Lomi Lomi which focuses on releasing energy blockages through massage, “allowing spirit, circulation, oxygen and life to flow through mind and body.”

Let’s look at the practicalities of the experience first. You’ll be ushered into a warm and dim, candlelit room with low music playing. You’ll need to ‘nude up’ – but don’t worry, you won’t feel exposed – you’ll be covered with a light wrap, with parts of your body revealed as you’re massaged. And you won’t be cold either, thanks to the nifty waterproof electric blanket that you’ll lie on to keep you all warm and toasty.

How did my massage go down? Suz began by speaking the seven principles of Huna Philosophy, designed to put you into the right ‘headspace’ for the treatement. She then uncovered my right-side, massaging up and down my body using long fluid rhythmic strokes. Her  hands flowed over my legs, back and shoulders with languid movements and my brain began to switch off (this does not happen often) as I became lulled into a deep relaxed state. Then it was on to my left-side, where the ritual was repeated.

This was a gentle and nurturing massage, but I felt Suz’s fingers unravelling the knots in my upper back, shoulders and neck and getting into the tight muscles of my calves. At times, the massage felt like a slow choreographed dance, Suz’s hands gliding up and down the sides of my body, across the back, and then slipping under my stomach. There were also times when it felt like she was brushing my body in short strokes – she explained later that this was releasing negative energy from the body.

After I was well and truly liquid, Suz asked me to turn over, and she worked on my arms, shoulders, head and face…yes, my face. One of the benefits of the treatment is Lymphatic Drainage, so this massage helps to clears toxins and waste which cannot be removed by any other means from your tissues and cells. Great for sinus sufferers like me.

Suz told me this was a massage designed for the emotions – so particularly good for people experiencing change or stress – and that it wasn’t uncommon for people to cry with release during the treatment. I didn’t cry, but I quite honestly did feel far calmer and more grounded at the end of the massage. I had hurried into the treatment room stressed and three minutes late, my brain racing through all the things I had to fit into my day, worrying about taking 90 minutes out for the massage; and I walked out with my brain far more at peace, but my body alive and recharged.
